New Grant for Digitizing Oriental Averroes-Manuscripts

The Fritz Thyssen Foundation has granted the Thomas-Institut a new two-year-project for digitizing Oriental Averroes-Manuscripts from British libraries.

The project will publish on the DARE web-site high quality images of round about 100 Arabic and Hebrew manuscripts containing texts by Averroes. These include, among others, manuscripts from the British Library in London, Cambridge University Library, and the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

Together with the manuscript images and corresponding manuscript descriptions, six works by Averroes which are represented in these manuscripts have been chosen for the preparation of digital full-text editions which are likewise to be published on the DARE web-site. These are the Arabic and Hebrew versions of Averroes's

  • Middle Commentary on the Prior Analytics (Talḫīṣ kitāb al-qiyās), with the Hebrew translation by Jacob Anatoli
  • Middle Commentary on the Posterior Analytics (Talḫīṣ kitāb al-burhān), with the Hebrew translation by Jacob Anatoli
  • Middle Commentary on De caelo (Talḫīṣ kitāb al-samāʾ wa-l-ʿālam), with the Hebrew translation by Solomon ben Joseph Ibn Ayyub

The project will start in April 2013.
