MS Munich, CLM 534, contains a young medical master’s notes on his reading at Montpellier c. 1325, reading of both set curricular texts and non-required texts that he wanted to study for professional reasons. Among the latter was Averroes’ Colliget, which had been known to the school for only 20 years. The notes suggest that the master read it selectively, mining it for information relevant to current Montpellier debates and to subjects of personal interest. It is proposed that, without apparently absorbing its contents systematically, he can still be said to have “read” it in the sense that he had assimilated those contents well enough to deploy his understanding effectively in his professional activities. The original version of this chapter was revised. The translation in the appendix of this chapter was changed from single column to double column. An outstanding representative of the Hebrew Jewish culture that then flourished in southern France, Gersonides wrote on mathematics, logic, astronomy, astrology, physical science, metaphysics and theology, and commented on almost the entire bible. His strong-minded attempt to integrate these different areas of study into a unitary system of thought was deeply rooted in the Aristotelian tradition and yet innovative in many respects, and thus elicited diverse and often impassionate reactions. For the first time, the twenty-one papers collected here describe Gersonides’ impact in all fields of his activity and the reactions from his contemporaries up to present-day religious Zionism. These thinkers were from Greek pagan, Muslim, Jewish, and Christian backgrounds and wrote their works in Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin. Still, they shared similar philosophical views of what constitutes the Highest Good, and of the intellectual activities to be undertaken in pursuit of that Good. Yet, they differed, often greatly, in the role they assigned to deeds and practical activities in the pursuit of this happiness. These differences were, at times, not only along religious lines, but also along political and ethical lines. Other differences treated the relationship between the body and intellectual happiness and the various ways in which bodily health and well-being can contribute to intellectual health and true happiness.
["‘...donc le bonheur ne réside pas dans le jeu’: Quelques brèves remarques sur le Commentaire moyen d’Averroès à l’Éthique à Nicomaque, X, 6"]}

The studies presented in this volume discuss the reception of prominent theories by Avicenna from the early 11th century onwards by thinkers like Averroes, Fahraddin ar-Razi, Samuel ibn Tibbon or Albertus Magnus. Among the topics which receive particular attention are the definition and existence of motion and time. Other important topics are covered too, such as Avicenna’s theories of vacuum, causality, elements, substantial change, minerals, floods and mountains. It emerges, among other things, that Avicenna inherited to the discussion an acute sense for the epistemological status of natural science and for the mental and concrete existence of its objects. The volume also addresses the philological and historical circumstances of the textual tradition and sheds light on the translators Dominicus Gundisalvi, Avendauth and Alfred of Sareshel in particular.
The articles of this volume are presented by scholars who convened in 2013 to discuss their research on the influence of Avicenna’s physics and cosmology in the Villa Vigoni, Italy.
["’Averroes ubique Avicennam persequitur’: Albert the Great’s Approach to the Physics of the Shifâ’ in the light of Averroes’ Criticisms"]}

An outstanding representative of the Hebrew Jewish culture that then flourished in southern France, Gersonides wrote on mathematics, logic, astronomy, astrology, physical science, metaphysics and theology, and commented on almost the entire bible. The article has three interrelated aims. First, to analyze a crucial passage of the Long Commentary on the De Anima by Averroes (Ibn Rušd, d. 1198 CE), one of the most informative criticisms of Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, d. 1037 CE) devised by the Commentator, unraveling its details by means of similar passages in other Aristotelian commentaries and other works by Averroes. Second, to emphasize the historical importance of this passage as a precious testimonium of the entrance of Avicenna’s philosophy in Andalusia, documenting that, in this text and in other quotations, Averroes’ knowledge of Avicenna’s thought is probably based on a given summa by Avicenna, the Kitāb al-Šifāʾ (Book of the Cure, or: of the Healing), apparently known first-hand. Finally, to advance the possibility that, in what he says about Avicenna in the passage under discussion, Averroes may depend on the Introduction of the Kitāb al-Šifāʾ authored by al-Ǧūzǧānī.

The contributions connect thinkers from antiquity through the Middle Ages and include philosophers from the three major monotheistic faiths—Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.

By emphasizing premodern philosophy’s shared textual roots in antiquity, particularly the writings of Plato and Aristotle, the volume highlights points of cross-pollination between different schools, cultures, and moments in premodern thought. Approaching the complex history of the premodern world in an accessible way, the editors organize the volume so as to underscore the difficulties the premodern period poses for scholars, while accentuating the fascinating interplay between the Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and Latin philosophical traditions. The contributors cover many topics ranging from the aims of Aristotle’s cosmos, the adoption of Aristotle’s Organon by al-Fārābī, and the origins of the Plotiniana Arabica to the role of Ibn Gabirol’s Fons vitae in the Latin West, the ways in which Islamic philosophy shaped thirteenth-century Latin conceptions of light, Roger Bacon’s adaptation of Avicenna for use in his moral philosophy, and beyond.
