| The three-volume series titled The Presence of the Prophet in Early Modern and Contemporary Islam, is the first attempt to explore the dynamics of the representation of the Prophet Muhammad in the course of Muslim history until the present. This first collective volume outlines his figure in the early Islamic tradition, and its later transformations until recent times that were shaped by Prophet-centered piety and politics. A variety of case studies offers a unique overview of the interplay of Sunnī amd Shīʿī doctrines with literature and arts in the formation of his image. They trace the integrative and conflictual qualities of a “Prophetic culture”, in which the Prophet of Islam continues his presence among the Muslim believers. |

| The greatest ancient interpreter of Aristotle, Alexander of Aphrodisias (fl. 200 AD) exerted a profound and enduring influence upon philosophy from Boethius until the modern era. Alexander’s interpretations laid the foundation for multiple philosophical views which were promoted as quintessentially Aristotelian by both Islamic and Latin thinkers throughout the Middle Ages. In the Renaissance, the University of Padua, a leading center of philosophical education and thought, established a scholarly tradition named “Alexandrinism” after him. |

| Aristotle’s De memoria et reminiscentia (“On Memory and Recollection”) is the oldest surviving systematic study of the nature of human memory. Forming part of Aristotle’s other minor writings on psychology that were intended as a supplement to his De anima (“On the Soul”) and known under the collective title Parva naturalia, Aristotle’s De memoria et reminiscentia gave rise to a vast number of commentaries in the Middle Ages. The present volume offers new knowledge on the medieval understanding of Aristotle’s theories on memory and recollection across the linguistic traditions including the Byzantine Greek, Latin and Arabic reception. |

| Comédien, directeur de théâtre, metteur en scène, dramaturge, mais aussi professeur de philosophie et de littérature, Denis Guénoun est l’auteur d’une quarantaine d’ouvrages, dont Hypothèses sur l’Europe. Un essai de philosophie (1994) et Le Théâtre est-il nécessaire ? (1997). Au sein de cette production dense, difficile de distinguer entre théorie dramatique; spéculation philosophique, politique, théologique; et écritures théâtrales. Si chacune de ces œuvres a déjà rencontré son audience – et leurs propositions respectives un accueil grandissant – leurs différents publics ne s’étaient pas forcément encore rencontrés. Le présent volume vient donc installer lecteur·rice·s et spectateur·rice·s de Denis Guénoun sur une même scène: celle où la littérature, la philosophie, la politique, la théologie et la morale acceptent de se soumettre à une inédite distribution pour mieux se donner la réplique. Les textes réunis dans ce volume par Éric Eigenmann, Martin Rueff et Marc Escola (Section de français), s’inscrivent dans le cadre des recherches menées au Centre d’études théâtrales (CET) de la Faculté des lettres, et proviennent de plusieurs chercheuses et chercheurs de l’Unil. Ils font suite à un colloque organisé à l’Université de Lausanne, à l’Université de Genève et à la Comédie de Genève en novembre 2017. |

| Ibn Bāğğa’s commentary on Aristotle’s On Generation and Corruption (Kitāb al-Kawn wa-l-fasād, Latin De generatione et corruptione) is one of the first commentaries to elaborate on the essential aspect of Aristotle’s text, that is, the analysis of change (μεταβολή, taġayyur). The commentary’s extant parts comprise a consecutive exposition of the contents of Aristotle’s work. However, the commentary may be read more as an introduction or a guide to the topic of generation than as a substitution for the original, as the paraphrases by Averroes seem to have become in the later tradition. The present study provides a new critical edition of the Arabic text and, for the first time, an English translation and a study of the structure of the commentary on the basis of the only two known manuscripts. |

| Few philosophical books have been so influential in the development of Western thought as Aristotle’s Metaphysics. For centuries Aristotle’s most celebrated work has been regarded as a source of inspiration as well as the starting point for every investigation into the structure of reality. Not surprisingly, the topics discussed in the book – the scientific status of ontology and metaphysics, the foundations of logical truths, the notions of essence and existence, the nature of material objects and their properties, the status of mathematical entities, just to mention some – are still at the centre of the current philosophical debate and are likely to excite philosophical minds for many years to come. This volume reconstructs in fourteen chapters a particular phase in the long history of the Metaphysics by focusing on the medieval reception of Aristotle’s masterpiece, specifically from its introduction in the Latin West in the twelfth through fifteenth centuries. | A Literary History of Medicine by the Syrian physician Ibn Abī Uṣaybiʿah (d. 1270) is the earliest comprehensive history of medicine. It contains biographies of over 432 physicians, ranging from the ancient Greeks to the author’s contemporaries, describing their training and practice, often as court physicians, and listing their medical works; all this interlaced with poems and anecdotes. These volumes present the first complete and annotated translation along with a new edition of the Arabic text showing the stages in which the author composed the work. Introductory essays provide important background. | The greatest ancient interpreter of Aristotle, Alexander of Aphrodisias (fl. 200 AD) exerted a profound and enduring influence upon philosophy from Boethius until the modern era. Alexander’s interpretations laid the foundation for multiple philosophical views which were promoted as quintessentially Aristotelian by both Islamic and Latin thinkers throughout the Middle Ages. In the Renaissance, the University of Padua, a leading center of philosophical education and thought, established a scholarly tradition named “Alexandrinism” after him. |

| Studying different hermeneutical approaches by Christian philosophers and theologians - such as appropriation, interpretation and criticism - to the Arabic and Hebrew intellectual traditions during the Middle Ages, the fourteen articles contained in this volume show how these processes both challenged and shaped the Western philosophical discourse. The contributions in this volume are dedicated to cross-cultural exchanges during the Middle Ages among exponents of the Arabic, Hebrew and Latin philosophical and theological traditions. They draw particular attention to the intellectual approaches which shaped the interplays among these traditions - interplays that were characterized by the contact of various languages being used by people of different religious beliefs in their quest for knowledge: Spanish Jews writing in Arabic, Jews collaborating in the translation of Arabic texts into Latin through the vernacular, Western Muslims whose writings were read mainly by Jews and Christians in Hebrew and Latin, etc. Altogether, the eleven studies contained in this book wish to offer new insights into the rich exchanges of knowledge among communities of learning and their scholarly traditions during the Middle Ages and beyond. |

| Comédien, directeur de théâtre, metteur en scène, dramaturge, mais aussi professeur de philosophie et de littérature, Denis Guénoun est l’auteur d’une quarantaine d’ouvrages, dont Hypothèses sur l’Europe. Un essai de philosophie (1994) et Le Théâtre est-il nécessaire ? (1997). Au sein de cette production dense, difficile de distinguer entre théorie dramatique; spéculation philosophique, politique, théologique; et écritures théâtrales. Si chacune de ces œuvres a déjà rencontré son audience – et leurs propositions respectives un accueil grandissant – leurs différents publics ne s’étaient pas forcément encore rencontrés. Le présent volume vient donc installer lecteur·rice·s et spectateur·rice·s de Denis Guénoun sur une même scène: celle où la littérature, la philosophie, la politique, la théologie et la morale acceptent de se soumettre à une inédite distribution pour mieux se donner la réplique. Les textes réunis dans ce volume par Éric Eigenmann, Martin Rueff et Marc Escola (Section de français), s’inscrivent dans le cadre des recherches menées au Centre d’études théâtrales (CET) de la Faculté des lettres, et proviennent de plusieurs chercheuses et chercheurs de l’Unil. Ils font suite à un colloque organisé à l’Université de Lausanne, à l’Université de Genève et à la Comédie de Genève en novembre 2017. |
