| Ibn Bāğğa’s commentary on Aristotle’s On Generation and Corruption (Kitāb al-Kawn wa-l-fasād, Latin De generatione et corruptione) is one of the first commentaries to elaborate on the essential aspect of Aristotle’s text, that is, the analysis of change (μεταβολή, taġayyur). The commentary’s extant parts comprise a consecutive exposition of the contents of Aristotle’s work. However, the commentary may be read more as an introduction or a guide to the topic of generation than as a substitution for the original, as the paraphrases by Averroes seem to have become in the later tradition. The present study provides a new critical edition of the Arabic text and, for the first time, an English translation and a study of the structure of the commentary on the basis of the only two known manuscripts. |

| L’analogia dell’essere attribuita ad Aristotele costituisce un tema filosofico tra i più discussi, sul quale è tornata recentemente a concentrarsi l’attenzione degli studiosi. Comprendendo un arco temporale che va dall’antichità all’età contemporanea, il tema permette di essere trattato da molteplici prospettive, aprendo il campo alla collaborazione fra esperti di epoche e discipline diverse. Il volume contiene i testi più significativi relativamente alla nascita e allo sviluppo della dottrina dell’analogia dell’essere. I passi sono riportati a fronte con traduzioni originali annotate e sono raccolti in due sezioni: quella di filosofia antica e tardoantica e quella di filosofia medievale araba e latina. La prima sezione comprende i principali testi aristotelici che della dottrina dell’analogia dell’essere hanno costituito l’origine, e i passi fra i più rilevanti della tradizione commentaristica antica e tardoantica, da Alessandro di Afrodisia (II-III sec. d.C) a Simplicio di Cilicia (VI sec. d.C.), nei quali è possibile individuare le prime fasi dello sviluppo di tale dottrina. La sezione di filosofia medievale araba e latina comprende passi scelti dei filosofi che rappresentano le tappe essenziali dello sviluppo della dottrina dell’analogia dell’essere nel medioevo arabo e latino, da al-Fārābī (m. 950 c.) a Tommaso d’Aquino (XIII sec.) a Tommaso de Vio, il “Gaetano” (XV-XVI sec.). Oltre a fornire un utile strumento per la ricostruzione delle origini dell’attribuzione dell’analogia dell’essere ad Aristotele, il volume individua nei testi riportati l’imprescindibile base per ulteriori sviluppi di tale dottrina nella metafisica contemporanea. |

| This volume contains studies based on papers delivered at the international conference of the PESHAT in Context project entitled “Themes, Terminology, and Translation Procedures in Twelfth-Century Jewish Philosophy.” The central figure in this book is Judah Ibn Tibbon. He sired the Ibn Tibbon family of translators, which influenced philosophical and scientific Hebrew writing for centuries. More broadly, the study of this early phase of the Hebrew translation movement also reveals that the formation of a standardized Hebrew terminology was a long process that was never fully completed. Terminological shifts are frequent even within the Tibbonide family, to say nothing of the fascinating terminological diversity displayed by other authors and translators discussed in this book. |

| The annual colloquium of the SIEPM in Freiburg, Germany, was groundbreaking in that it featured a more or less equal number of talks on all three medieval cultures that contributed to the formation of Western philosophical thought: the Islamic, Jewish, and Christian traditions. Indeed, the subject of the colloquium, ‘The Origin and Nature of Language and Logic in Medieval Islamic, Jewish, and Christian Thought’, lent itself to such a cross-cultural approach. In all these traditions, partially inspired by ancient Greek philosophy, partially by other sources, language and thought, semantics and logic occupied a central place. As a result, the chapters of the present volume effortlessly traverse philosophical, religious, cultural, and linguistic boundaries and thus in many respects open up new perspectives. It should not be surprising if readers delight in chapters of a philosophical tradition outside of their own as much as they do in those in their area of expertise. Among the topics discussed are the significance of language for logic; the origin of language: inspiration or convention; imposition or coinage; the existence of an original language; the correctness of language; divine discourse; animal language; the meaningfulness of animal sounds; music as communication; the scope of dialectical disputation; the relation between rhetoric and demonstration; the place of logic and rhetoric in theology; the limits of human knowledge; the meaning of categories; the problem of metaphysical entailment; the need to disentangle the metaphysical implications of language; the quantification of predicates; and the significance of linguistic custom for judging logical propositions. |

| Galien de Pergame (129-ca 216) a systématisé l'ensemble du savoir médical ancien et sa doctrine s'est maintenue jusqu'à l'époque moderne. Son oeuvre tentaculaire a aussi innervé la pensée philosophique, logique et théologique. Toutefois, Galien a fait l'objet de critiques de la part de ses contemporains, puis de ses successeurs. Après le triomphe du galénisme à la fin de l'Antiquité, les penseurs islamiques ont introduit les premières brèches dans ce système. Ces attaques, relayées en Occident latin et à Byzance, ont connu une ampleur nouvelle à la Renaissance avec la remise en cause et la déconstruction de l'autorité galénique. Dans ce livre est proposée une histoire dynamique de la réception de Galien à travers différents cas d'anti-galénismes. Les études qui y sont réunies portent sur des textes peu connus, voire inédits. Elles recensent les critiques contre Galien, tout en explorant différentes facettes de sa pensée médicale et philosophique. Ce parcours permet ainsi de suivre les changements de paradigmes épistémologiques qui s'opèrent au fil des siècles, mais aussi de mieux cerner, par la négative, ce que fut le galénisme durant sa longue tradition. |

| Gersonides’ Afterlife is the first full-scale treatment of the reception of one of the greatest scientific minds of medieval Judaism: Gersonides (1288–1344). | La traduction arabo-latine attribuee a Guillaume de Luna (debut ou milieu du XIIIe siecle?) du commentaire moyen d'Averroes sur la Logica vetus a fait l'objet en 1996 d'un premier volume: curieusement peut-etre, il proposait l'edition du texte de la troisieme uvre concernee, le Peri Hermeneias ou De interpretatione (Averrois opera, Series B: Averroes latinus, XII). Le present volume (Averrois opera, Series B: Averroes latinus, XI) poursuit l'edition dudit commentaire dans la meme traduction arabo-latine et porte, non sur la premiere uvre de la trilogie: l'Isagoge, mais sur la deuxieme: les Categories ou Predicaments. A peine impliquee dans des citations d'auteurs, l'oeuvre n'est plus connue que par six manuscrits; s' y ajoutent douze editions des XVe et XVIe siecles. La presente edition ressemble a la precedente du commentaire du Peri Hermeneias au moins sous quatre rapports: 1. une comparaison systematique de la version latine medievale du commentaire d'Averroes avec la version hebraique correspondante a ete exclue, ces deux versions ne pouvant etre qu'independantes l'une de l'autre; 2. dans l'apparat comparatif de la version latine avec l'original arabe, les mots arabes sont imprimes en arabe, puis retraduits en latin dans la langue meme du traducteur, sur base d'une etude systematique de la terminologie utilisee dans la traduction; 3. les lexiques sur lesquels s'appuie cette etude de la terminologie, rendent compte d'a peu pres toutes les equivalences arabo-latines etablies par le traducteur, et non, parmi celles-ci, d'une categorie particuliere ne reprenant, par exemple, que les concepts philosophiques; 4. dans les lexiques, les mots arabes sont transcrits en caracteres latins: certaines verifications sont ainsi accessibles aux lecteurs non arabisants; quant aux arabisants, la vocalisation qu'implique la transcription leur signale comment, en fonction de l'interpretation supposee avoir ete celle du traducteur medieval, le referent arabe a de nouveau ete relu et compris. |

Most of the articles in the volume were presented at the conference "Averroism between the 15th and 17th century," which was held on 9th -10th November, 2016 by the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts at Palacký University, Olomouc, the Czech Republic.
