Le Compendium du livre De l’âme d’Aristote (Muḫtaṣar Kitāb al-nafs) compte parmi les premières œuvres d’exégète d’Averroès. On en traduit ici le chapitre sur l’intellect qui contient l’essentiel des questions sur lesquelles le Commentateur reviendra dans toute son œuvre. Ce qui l’occupe est d’établir si l’acte de l’intellect humain est permanent ou bien intermittent, et plus largement de savoir si notre puissance rationnelle est elle-même éternelle ou bien engendrée et corruptible. L’auteur montre que nos concepts sont en vérité ambivalents et que s’ils sont en partie soustraits au temps par leur sens, leur rapport aux images leur confère une forme de potentialité. C’est sur cette puissance que l’accent est mis : quelle est la nature de la capacité de penser? quel peut-être son substrat? qu’est-ce qui la meut, et jusqu’où? L’édition du texte par David Wirmer montre qu’il fut plusieurs fois révisé et son intérêt est double. Il montre à la fois quelle fut la doctrine du jeune Averroès, disciple de son prédécesseur andalou Ibn Bāğğa (Avempace), et comment le Cordouan inlassablement critique devait juger bon de la réviser. Averroès est connu dans l’histoire comme l’auteur du Grand Commentaire du traité De l’âme. C’est dans ce texte du Compendium qu’on voit s’en profiler la doctrine. |

Les deux textes en dialogue qui constituent la trame de ce livre sont une méditation sur le fantasme comme lieu et sujet de l'amour. Mêlant références et implications, ils proposent de confronter dans une perspective inédite deux personnages exceptionnels: Guido Cavalcanti, le "premier ami" de Dante et maître inégalé de la phénoménologie amoureuse, et Ibn Rushd, l'Averroès des Latins, le philosophe arabe qui aura le plus profondément marqué la pensée occidentale du XIIIe au XVIe siècle. Si pour ces deux auteurs la jonction avec l'intellect unique désigne la perfection suprême, c'est la fonction du fantasme qui, chaque fois, se révèle décisive. De quelle façon les pensées nous appartiennent-elles ? Comment une idée peut-elle devenir "mienne" ? C'est le fantasme - telle est la réponse du poète et du philosophe - qui, par le désir, fait l'intelligence propre au sujet. Mais jusqu'où ? Pour le poète, si le fantasme doit périr pour que la jonction amoureuse ait lieu, l'individu immodérément affecté ne survit que comme un automate ou comme la statue de lui-même ; pour le philosophe, qui défend l'abolition de l'image et son désir permanent, l'espèce humaine dans son ensemble advient comme sujet politique de la félicité. |

Le mot le plus célèbre de la philosophie est un verbe latin?: cogito. C’est celui de Descartes, où l’on retient que se joue l’être même de l’ego. C’est le cogito de la psychanalyse, celui dont elle dénonce l’orgueil, l’incomplétude, et qui, en somme, l’a fait naître. Mais c’est un mot malheureux, que la modernité a perdu. Chez Averroès, jadis, la cogitation avait en arabe ses facultés propres et trouvait dans le fantasme l’espace de sa puissance. Quel espace ? Quelle puissance éminente ? On a fait le livre sur cela. |

The article examines the relation that Aquinas' theory of the beatific vision maintains with Averroes' noetics as presented in his Great Commentary on the De anima. Starting with his Commentary on the Sentences, in which the young Thomas Aquinas offers an explicit transposition of the philosophical intellection of separate substances into the Christian theological order, through to his later works where no mention of it is found, we will endeavour to present the exact nature of these borrowings and to evaluate their accuracy by questioning the conceptual coherence of Aquinas' gesture: could Aquinas base his conception of a vision of God by essence on a noetic construction which was originally part of a system judged both erroneous and contrary to faith? Can one concede theologically, concerning the relation between divine essence and intellect, what one refuses philosophically, concerning the relation between the separate intellect and the body? Although Aquinas and his followers, in the incipient quarrel, assert it to be so, we will indicate how the original paradoxical borrowing maintains something conceptually problematic at the heart of Aquinas' thinking. |

According to Thomas Aquinas, Averroes's philosophy of the mind is characterized by the doctrine of the "double subject", which is found in his Long Commentary on the De anima. As it is well-known, Averroes asserts that the intelligibles in act or theoretical intelligibles may be said to have two subjects (duo subiecta): the material intellect and the image of the cogitative power, whose connection allows individual human beings to think. We try here to know if it is properly a "theory" produced by Averroes. By analysing all the texts dealing with it, we both intend to justify the use of the term "subiectum" applied to the image and to show that the expression "duo subiecta", equivocal from a lexical point of view, is totally clear from a conceptual one. The doctrine of the double subject is certainly a thesis of Averroes consequent with his latter stage of his philosophy and his new teaching on the material intellect, but it is not, contrary to the interpretation of his Latin opponents, the doctrine of the two "substrates" which would make man the second place of the intelligible in act. |

Les deux textes en dialogue qui constituent la trame de ce livre sont une méditation sur le fantasme comme lieu et sujet de l'amour. Mêlant références et implications, ils proposent de confronter dans une perspective inédite deux personnages exceptionnels: Guido Cavalcanti, le "premier ami" de Dante et maître inégalé de la phénoménologie amoureuse, et Ibn Rushd, l'Averroès des Latins, le philosophe arabe qui aura le plus profondément marqué la pensée occidentale du XIIIe au XVIe siècle. Si pour ces deux auteurs la jonction avec l'intellect unique désigne la perfection suprême, c'est la fonction du fantasme qui, chaque fois, se révèle décisive. De quelle façon les pensées nous appartiennent-elles ? Comment une idée peut-elle devenir "mienne" ? C'est le fantasme - telle est la réponse du poète et du philosophe - qui, par le désir, fait l'intelligence propre au sujet. Mais jusqu'où ? Pour le poète, si le fantasme doit périr pour que la jonction amoureuse ait lieu, l'individu immodérément affecté ne survit que comme un automate ou comme la statue de lui-même ; pour le philosophe, qui défend l'abolition de l'image et son désir permanent, l'espèce humaine dans son ensemble advient comme sujet politique de la félicité. |

Le Compendium du livre De l’âme d’Aristote (Muḫtaṣar Kitāb al-nafs) compte parmi les premières œuvres d’exégète d’Averroès. On en traduit ici le chapitre sur l’intellect qui contient l’essentiel des questions sur lesquelles le Commentateur reviendra dans toute son œuvre. Ce qui l’occupe est d’établir si l’acte de l’intellect humain est permanent ou bien intermittent, et plus largement de savoir si notre puissance rationnelle est elle-même éternelle ou bien engendrée et corruptible. L’auteur montre que nos concepts sont en vérité ambivalents et que s’ils sont en partie soustraits au temps par leur sens, leur rapport aux images leur confère une forme de potentialité. C’est sur cette puissance que l’accent est mis : quelle est la nature de la capacité de penser? quel peut-être son substrat? qu’est-ce qui la meut, et jusqu’où? L’édition du texte par David Wirmer montre qu’il fut plusieurs fois révisé et son intérêt est double. Il montre à la fois quelle fut la doctrine du jeune Averroès, disciple de son prédécesseur andalou Ibn Bāğğa (Avempace), et comment le Cordouan inlassablement critique devait juger bon de la réviser. Averroès est connu dans l’histoire comme l’auteur du Grand Commentaire du traité De l’âme. C’est dans ce texte du Compendium qu’on voit s’en profiler la doctrine. |

Il montre \u00e0 la fois quelle fut la doctrine du jeune Averro\u00e8s, disciple de son pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseur andalou Ibn B\u0101\u011f\u011fa (Avempace), et comment le Cordouan inlassablement critique devait juger bon de la r\u00e9viser. Averro\u00e8s est connu dans l\u2019histoire comme l\u2019auteur du Grand Commentaire du trait\u00e9 De l\u2019\u00e2me.
