The purpose of this paper is twofold, namely, that of presenting the concept of the real distinction between essence and existence in Aquinas, as well as demonstrating to what extent Aquinas was influenced by Islamic philosophers in this regard. The conclusion will demonstrate that Aquinas relies on both Ibn Sina and Ibn Rusd (Averroes) in this early work, but that he has taken the distinction in a different direction.
