Qalonymos ben Qalonymos of Arles (b. 1286 - d. after 1329) translated from Arabic into hebrew, among the others, Averroes's Middle Commentary on Aristotle's Metaphysics. As tentatively suggested here, this translation, made in 1317, full of lacunas and yet unpublished, was apparently revised thrice: 1. around 1330, possibly by a relative of Qalonymos ben Qalonymos, Qalonymos ben David Todrosi; 2. after 1330 c. and before 1346, maybe by Qalonymos ben Qalonymos himself; 3. after 1330 c. and before 1438, by a still anonymous, possibly Italian, Jewish author. |

This paper examines and compares two commentaries on Aristotle Metaphyics, Alpha Elatton. In the Arabic tradition this was considered to be the first book of the Metaphysics, and it accordingly acquired more importance than it is usually given today. After giving a brief resume of Elatton and its transmission into Arabic, the paper discusses the commentaries of Yaḥyá ibn ʿAdī, a Christian commentator of the Baghdad School, and by Averroes. it is argued that these two commentaries show rather different conceptions of Elatton as a text, and metaphysics as a science. In the final section Averroes' commentary on Elatton is shown to resonate strongly with Averroes' famous Decisive Treatise. Concluding remarks consider the question of how Averroes' project as a commentator related to that of the Baghdad School. |

[2010]}

The story we read in books about the Renaissance tells us that Petrarch and Poggio rediscovered the books of antiquity that had been copied for centuries in medieval abbeys. The re-introduction of Greek science and philosophy, however, began in the twelfth century but occurred mainly in the thirteenth century. These works were first translated into Syriac and Arabic in the eighth and ninth centuries and stored in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. There they were read, used, and commented on by Arab philosophers, of whom the most famous was Averroes (1126-1198), who lived in Cordoba. The translation of his commentaries on Aristotle changed the European philosophical scene profoundly. Averroes, who also had a philosophy of his own, had followers in Latin Europe until the sixteenth century. His work was well-known and he appeared in histories of philosophy until the middle of the nineteenth century, when the Arabs were pushed out of the history books. One reason was the invention of the concept of the Renaissance. |

The paper concerns the Kitāb al-Qirāḍ of Averroes’ Bidāyat al-muǧtahid. The book is analyzing the ancient contract of Qirāḍ (also known as Muḍāraba) that plays an important role in the field of Islamic Finance. It is translated into the German language and annotated with reference to modern works on Qirāḍ. By so doing the article shows the significance Averroes’ work still has for today’s scholars. |
