Una quaestio di Urbano da Bologna nel commento alla Physica di Averro\u00e8"},"abstract":"In Latin Europe, the controversy over spontaneous generation of perfect animals \u2013 namely those whose breeding occurs through sexual reproduction \u2013 is received in different ways, varying from positions very close to Avicenna\u2019s, as in the case of Pietro Pomponazzi, to interpretations that rather refer to Averroes\u2019 perspective. To this \u2018Averroist front\u2019 undoubtedly belongs the figure of Urbano da Bologna, author of the Expositio commenti Averrois in VIII libros Physicorum \u2013 a work that can be defined a supercommentary to Averroes\u2019 Physica \u2013 composed in Bologna around 1334. The present study aims to provide the complete transcription of a quaestio that is present in the work \u2013 but which was disputed according to its author also in public \u2013 as an example of the elaboration of the theme of spontaneous generation in the early 14th century. The aim of the present study is to \r\ndiscover Averroes\u2019 final theory on the relationship between the material intellect \r\nand the active intellect and their connection to human soul. Reviewing various \r\ntheories of Averroes on this issue, this study shows that despite ambiguity in his \r\nexplanations, his final theory is that he believes these two intellects exist apart from \r\nhuman soul. Considering the relationship between the material intellect and the \r\nactive intellect, he believes that in some aspects both of them are the same, yet they \r\nare different in some other aspects that is, regarding their acts, they are different \r\nbecause the active intellect acts as a creator of forms while the material intellect is \r\njust a receiver of the forms. Alternative frameworks see the problem as a conflict between faith and reason, tradition and speculation, mysticism and rationalism. The medieval Muslim philosopher Ibn Rushd, or Averroes, (1126\u201398), who lived in medieval Spain, attempts in his philosophy to reconcile philosophy with religion. This article probes into an \u2018Averroist dialogue\u2019 through his rationalist philosophy. Meanwhile, al-Ghazali (1058\u20131111), from Persia, tends towards an Islamic philosophy based on cause and effect and determined by God. Ibn Rushd's retaliation to al-Ghazali was his defence of the primacy of philosophy and reason, and a call for diversity of knowledge. In particular, I argue that to the contrary, self-consciously critical reflection on authority was a widespread intellectual virtue in the Islamic world.
