Detailed Description
  • Collation:
    The codex contains two parts with five layers.
    The first part has four quaternions comprising ff. 1r- 8v , 9r- 16v , 17r- 24v and 25r- 31v .
    The second part has one quinion comprising ff. 32r- 41v and a single leaf f. 42r- 42v .
    Collation according to Steinmann : 1^a + 3 VI^24 + (IV-1)^31 + (V+1)^42 + 1^b.
    Catchwords to ff. 16v , 24v and in the second part (ff. 32r- 42v ).
  • Condition Description:
    One half of ff. 30r- 30v is cut off.
    After f. 31v , one leaf is ripped out. It seems, that this leaf was not signed out, there is no discontinuity in the foliation given in Sturlese .
  • Decoration:
    There are no titles on top of the pages. The initials are in red and blue on ff. 1r- 30v and 32r- 42v . According to Lacombe , in ff. 7r- 31v they are just in minium. Red rubrics to the page in ff. 1r , 7r- 30r and 32r- 42v . In ff. 7r- 30r apparently also in blue, if Sturlese is not mistaken.
  • Layout:
    Text is set in long lines in ff. 1r - 6v . The written area is 175 mm x 120 mm and designated by ink lines. Horizontal lining is missing.

    Text is set in two columns in ff. 7r - 30r . According to Lacombe this is valid up to f. 31v . The written area is 185 mm x 130 mm, the columns are designated by ink lines. Horizontal lining is missing.

    Text is set in long lines in ff. 32r - 42v . The written area is 180/190 mm x 130 mm and designated by ink lines.

    30/38 lines to the page in ff. 1r- 6v .
    41/47 lines to the page in ff. 7r- 30r .
    48/52 lines to the page in ff. 32r- 42v .

    Apparently, ff. 30v- 31v were originally empty and have been filled in by the third hand.
  • Hand Description:
    First hand ( end of the 14th century ): ff. 1r- 6v .
    Second hand ( end of the 14th century ): ff. 7r- 30r .
    Third hand ( end of the 14th century ): ff. 30v- 31v .
    Fourth hand: title on f. 9r .
    Fifth hand: erased ownership remark.
    Sixth hand ( end of the 14th century ): ff. 32r- 42v . This is the text of the Middle Commentary on De Generatione et Corruptione. According to Lacombe , it is written in a cursiva and abbreviated, most difficult to read, apparently by an English or German hand.
  • Binding Description:
    The codex is bound in wood with brown leather, the back has been renewed.
  • Provenance:
    On f. 1r at the bottom we can find a stamp: "BIBL. PUBL. BASILEENSIS".
    On f. 29v at the bottom we can see: "Iste liber est fratris (Henrici Echerbein ordinis) predicatorum domus Argentinensis".
    On f. 30r at the bottom we can see: "(Iste liber est)" and "(Iste liber est fratris Henrici)".
    On f. 30v we can see: "Iste liber est fratris Henrici ... ordinis Predicatorum Domus Argen[toratensis]". This reference is the only one to be found in Lacombe , it is not given in Sturlese .
    According to Sturlese , the codex is probably from Strasbourg and went to the library of the Dominican convent in Basel in the 15th century . After the secularisation in 1525 , it went to the library of the University of Basel in 1559 , where it acquired its current signature.
