Detailed Description
  • Foliation:
    Manus OnLine restarts the foliation with the second section, cf. collation.
    In the upper outer margins, we have an old foliation with arabic numbers in brown ink. Manus OnLine dates the enumeration of the second section to the 15th century .
  • Collation:
    A composite manuscript out of two codicological sections (ff. 1r- 161v and 162r- 202v ).
    Section 1 has 15 quinions (ff. 1r- 150v ), 1 quaternion (ff. 151r- 158v ) and 1 ternion (ff. 159r- 163v ). This section has reclaimers in the lower outer margins in minor letters a-r, associated with an arabic number.
    Section 2 has 2 sexternions (ff. 164r- 187v ), 1 binion (ff. 188r- 189v ) and 2 quaternions (ff. 190r- 205v ).

  • Condition Description:
    The last folio of section 1 is mutilated (ff. 163r- 163v ).
  • Decoration:
    Section 1 has titles in vermillion and purple, section 2 has the titles just in vermillion. We have ornated initials on f. 1r , one having a picture in it, cf. below; indeed, Manus OnLine notes, that this whole page is ornated, and that we have gold and gold leaf decoration in section 1. The smaller initials of this section are either in red and blue, entwined with violet lines, or in blue, entwined with red lines. Section 1 has paragraph signs in vermillion, purple and blueish red, used alternately. In section 1 the miniatures are from the school of Ferrara, possibly performed by Guglielmo Giraldi (cf. the signature on f. 161v ). One initial on f. 1r shows Peter Lombard , holding the codex with his right hand while pointing with the left hand. On the bottom of this page, there is a picture of a mountain (Mount Carmel) in brown ink, framed by a laurel wreath. We have miniatures from the school of Bologna in section 2. Section 2 has small hands drawn to highlight passages of the text. We have two different types of watermarks. On the back side of the front cover flyleaf, we have a bird on three overlapping mountains, inscribed into a circle, on top of which we have a six-pointed star. On ff. 162r- 163v (section 1) we have an ascending lion. According to Manus OnLine, both could not be identified any further. We have leaden lining.

    Text is set in two columns in section 2.

    49 lines to the page in section 1, 38-40 lines to the page in section 2. The number of designated lines is overall one higher, but with one line per page not being used.

    No script on ff. 162r- 163v , 189r- 189v and 204v- 205r .
  • Hand Description:
    Text is written by three Gothic hands.
    Section 1 is written by one hand in brown ink.
    Section 2 is written by two hands (ff. 164r- 188v and 190r- 204r ) in brown ink.
  • Binding Description:
    Cardboard binding with parchment cover, having a smooth back.
  • Provenance:
    The date 1469 can be found on f. 161v , while for the second section, we only have an estimated time of origin ( 14th century ). The first section can also be dated to 1469 - 1470 based on the decoration.
    Section 1 was produced by the Carthusian monastery of St. Christopher in Ferrara in 1469 and purchased in the following year by Battista Panetti , who was then prior of the convent of St. Paul , as attested in his own hand on f. 161v : "Emi ego frater Baptista Pannetus theologie professor indignus hunc Petrum de Aquila vulgo dictum Scotellus a priore Sancti Christophori de Cartusia et pro ipso a Gulielmo miniatore ferrariensi cive precio inter me et ipsum convento MCCCCLXX die vero duodecima februarij dum essem prior Sancti Paulj Ferrariae ordinis Carmelj".
    On flyleaf IIr, in black ink, we have: "DELLA P. UNIVERSITA' DI FERRARA", the use of this note being witnessed from 1824 to 1859 .
    On the back side cover, a hand from the 18th century wrote: " Petri [ ] [ ] Ms. 1469 S. Thoma Tract. cum corret. Bapt. Panetj ".
    On f. 204r , we have an autograph of Battista Panetti : "Visus et correctus a me frater Baptista Panetio carmelita die 23 sept. 1498 Regij ac Muttine".
