Physical Description
  • Material: Parchment
  • Pages: 199 + IV leaves
  • Leaves Format: not available
  • Dimensions: 360 x 225 mm

Detailed Description
  • Foliation:
The antefolios serve as ff. 1r . The foliation follows Zięba , who replaced the erroneous and incomplete foliation from the 19th century.
  • Collation:
    (1-4)^(5+5) (ff. 2r ), 5^(5+3) (ff. 42r ), (6-7)^(6+6) (ff. 50r ), 8^(3+3) (ff. 74r ), (9-12)^(5+5) (ff. 80r ), 13^(5+4) (ff. 120r ), 14^(1+1 (ff. 129r ), 15^(5+5) (ff. 131r ), (16-19)^(6+6) (ff. 141r ), 20^(6+5) (ff. 189r ). Up to f. 128v , the codex seems to be out of one piece. Two folios of fascicle 5 were apparently transferred to fascicle 14 (without loss of text). We have ornate reclaimers for fascicles 1-4, 6, 7, 9-19. No catchwords.
  • Condition Description:
Some traces of repair work on the natural lacunae remain (fibre from sewing).
  • Decoration:
We have initials, entwined with many lines, the larger ones in three colours. The minor initials have two colours, that is, red and blue. The running pages have majuscules in alternating red and blue. The ornaments of the codex were done in France. Within the incomplete initial on f. 1r, we have a winged serpent with human form, and the tree of knowledge is represented. On the folio, which had been glued to the outer binding (front), but now functions as an antefolio, we have some inexperienced delineations: two heads, a child and a picture of a man down to the breast, leading a horse. On f. 12v , we have a picture of a seated female and on f. 161r a picture of Aristotle , ornated with a long beard and holding a book in his hand.We have schemata and geometric delineations, corresponding to the text, cf.: "quadratura circuli" (f. 2v ) and schemata to illustrate time and motion (ff. 31v , 51v and 118r ).We have incomplete rubrication and notes from the scribe to the rubricator on f. 166v ("Physionomia"), f. 171v ("De motu cordis") and f. 173v ("De proprietate elementorum") in the margins.
  • Layout:
Text is set in long lines. Ff. 49v , 79v and 128r have no script.
  • Hand Description:
Text is written by two hands, from the end of the 13th century (ff. 2r and 80r ) and the beginning of the 14th century (ff. 50r and 141r ), respectively. The text of the De Substantia Orbis (f. 1r ) is written in another hand.
  • Binding Description:
Wooden cover with leather. After the restauration (1932), some fragments of the old leather binding, which was ornated with five bosses, were taken away, as it was newly glued to the cover. The new back is joined on five places. Ante- and postfolio are out of new paper (ff. I and IV ). Ff. II and III are out of parchment, and were formerly glued to the cover, but now function as ante- and postfolio, too.
  • Provenance:
There is an illegible inscription on the front cover. The codex was made in a French monastery. On f. 1v one can see: "Philosophia naturalis data Collegio per magistrum Iohannem Wyllisch", referring to Ioannnes Willisch de Cracovia, who got his "artium baccalarius" in Prague in 1401. On postfolio III we have: "Iste liber obligatus est frater Iohanni Snewelino pro tribus libris ... fratribus de Grisaco"; and below that: "Fratris C. Edelini [?] una Biblia parva, qui cum ...", with added notes on expenses. On the same postfolio, we have a note, apparently referring to a bishop from Płock from the 15th century, indicating, that the codex was in Płock at that time: "Casimirus Dei gracia episcopus". On f. 128v , one can see: "Domini Andree de Florencia, qui moratur coram Simonem [?]".
