According to the Incipit of the preface to this collection on fol.
1r,
the manuscript was produced in Marseilles.
The dating is disputed: Whereas the online catalogue of the NLI dates the manuscript to the 15th century (cf. http://merhav.nli.org.il/permalink/f/ldj0th/NNL_ALEPH21290465210005171), the codicological database SfarData, which is based on the work of Malachi Beit-Aryeh, dates it to the second half of the 14th century (cf. Sfardata Record Key : ZB114). This is also the dating followed by Berman, A Manuscript Named "Shshan Limmudim"…, p. 368, note 2, who localises the manuscript in a circle of scholars (meʿayyenim) that purportedly had formed around
Samuel ben Judah of Marseilles
. However, one of the texts contained in this manuscript mentions (fol.
130v
, lines 8–9) Kalonymos [=Crescas] ben Isaac Nathan of Marseilles, a son of the rich community leader and scholar Isaac Nathan of Arles (cf. Stouff, Isaac Nathan et les siens), and actually calls him "head of the scholars" (roʾš ha-meʿayyenim). He was active in the middle of the 15th century and, in fact, is known to have settled in Marseilles around 1446 (cf. the document published in Revue des études juives 48 (1904), pp. 66–73, where it says on p. 69: "Et magister Crescas Natani, filius dicti Isaac Natani, qui denuo se habitavit in dicta civitate Massilie…"; for this and further references cf. Ernest Wickersheimer, Dictionnaire biographique des médecins en France au Moyen Âge, Paris 1979, p. 111). Thus it is virtually certain that the manuscript was produced not earlier than the middle of the 15th century.
