Detailed Description
  • Foliation:
    The Newberry Library Online Catalogue gives the number of folios as 188, with modern foliation on ff. 1 - 183, and unnumbered folios after ff. 7, 14, 32, 112, and 116.
  • Collation:
    According to the Newberry Library Online Catalogue: (1-7)^8 + 8^10 (5 is a stub only) + (9-22)^8 + 23^12(-12). Quires are numbered I-XXII on the lower margin of the verso of the last folio. We have catchwords.
    There are some reclaimers in the final quaternion, which consists of 8 folios. They are signed at the bottom of the pages: "I', II', III'" etc.
  • Decoration:
    The titles on top of the pages are written in red and blue. Initials in red and blue, entwined and elongated with lines. According to the Newberry Library Online Catalogue the initial on f. 1r is 8 lines high extended to form partial margins. The Catalogue adds, that at the beginning of items 1 - 6 (up to f. 92r ) we have the initial word or words written alternately in red and blue. Paragraph signs throughout, according to the Newberry Library Online Catalogue.
  • Layout:
    Text is set in two columns.

    40 lines to the page, according to the Newberry Library Online Catalogue. Prickings are visible in the outer margin of the verso of the last folio (f. 182v).
  • Hand Description:
    Text is written by one West German librarian, if d'Alverny is not mistaken.
    According to the Newberry Library Online Catalogue, the text is written in northern European gothic textualis media.
  • Binding Description:
    Brown morocco, according to the Newberry Library Online Catalogue.
  • Provenance:
    According to the Newberry Library Online Catalogue, the codex was written in Germany or Austria.
    On f. 1r we have an inscription from the 17th - 18th century on top of the page: "Monasterii Mellicensis L. 35". The codex was once Mellicensis 389 (529). The Newberry Library Online Catalogue notes the former signature Melk no. 529 (J47).
    After Melk, the codex was with the London booksellers P. Goldschmidt and later legally bought and transferred to the Newberry library.
