Physical Description
  • Material: Parchment
  • Pages: I + 160 + (I-II) leaves
  • Leaves Format: not available
  • Dimensions: 345 x 235 mm

Detailed Description
  • Foliation:
Modern foliation with pencil in the upper right corner (ff. 1r- 160v ).
In section 1, the folios of fascicles 4-5 and 7-8 are numbered in pencil with small letters in the lower right margins.
  • Collation:
A composite manuscript out of two codicological sections: section 1 (ff. 1r- 74v = fasc. 1-9) and section 2 (ff. 75r- 160v = fasc. 10-16). The two parts have to have been bound together in early days, which is suggested by the titles in the upper margin on f. 1r (see notes to item 1, the Expositio in Aristotelis libros Elenchorum). These were not added by the scribe of the text, but by a contemporary hand, nonetheless.
    Collation of section 1 (first words on the second folio are: iam dicta scientia): 1^8 (ff. 1r- 8v ); 2^8 (ff. 9r- 16v ); 3^8 (ff. 17r- 24v ); 4^8 (ff. 25r- 32v ); 5^8 (ff. 33r- 40v ); 6^8 (ff. 41r- 48v ); 7^10 (ff. 49r- 58v ); 8^8 (ff. 59r- 66v ); 9^8 (ff. 67r- 74v ).
    Collation of section 2 (first words on the second folio are: methodus ut compositio): 10^12 (ff. 75r- 86v ); 11^12 (ff. 87r- 98v ); 12^12 (ff. 99r- 110v ); 13^12 (ff. 111r- 122v ); 14^12 (ff. 123r- 134v ); 15^12 (ff. 135r- 146v ); 16^(12+2) (ff. 147r- 160v ).
    Reclaimers on ff. 8v , 40v , 48v , 58v , 86v , 98v , 110v , 122v , 134v , 146v and 158v . There is a trace of a reclaimer on f. 16v .
  • Condition Description:
The flesh side is the outer side.
Ff. 159r- 160v seem to have been added at a later date, to complete the text. They measure 330 mm x 235 mm.
  • Decoration:
We have running titles: for book I of the Expositio in Aristotelis libros De anima, these can be found up to f. 136v , where decoration for the beginning of book II was done. This book already begins on f. 132r and its actual beginning is without decoration. The running titles in section 2 have letters and ciphers in alternating red and blue. On f. 1r , we have an initial over five lines in red and blue, with a stem in the same colours in the inner margin. A similarly decorated initial over three lines can be found on f. 47v . Initials of chapters in section 1 are three lines high and alternately blue entwined with red lines or red entwined with green-azure lines. However, ff. 74r- 74v in this section are without any decoration and we also have spaces for initials left empty in ff. 1r- 74r . F. 75r has an initial over eight lines in red and blue, with a stem in the same colours in the inner and upper margin. On f. 93v we can see an initial over six lines, also in red and blue, with a stem in the same colours between the columns. The same decoration can be found on ff. 135v and 136v , with initials being four and two lines high, respectively. In section 2, the initials of chapters are two lines high, alternately blue entwined with red lines or vice versa. We have paragraph signs in alternating red and blue. Ink lining in section 1.
  • Layout:
Text is set in two columns. In section 1, the written area is 227 mm x 140 mm with 10 mm between the columns. Section 2 has a written area of 230 mm x 147 mm in ff. 75r - 158v and 220 mm x 140 mm in ff. 159r - 160v with 13 mm between the columns.

    55 lines to the page in section 1, 58 in ff. 75r - 158v and 44 in ff. 159r - 160v.
  • Hand Description:
Text is written by seven hands.
In section 1, we have four hands: ff. 1r- 74r (libraria, not using the first line), 74r , 74v lines 1 - 22 and on the same folio lines 23 - 39. The latter hands are all in cursiva and quite irregular.
In section 2, we have three hands: ff. 75r- 158v (probably Parisian, not using the first line), 159r (not using the first line) and 159r- 160v .
  • Binding Description:
Old binding, wooden covers with leather, five nervatures. Traces of three clasps: two on the outside of the front cover, one at the top and one at the bottom.
  • Provenance:
On f. 1r we find the older signatures "957" and "499" and a note on costs: "lx sol. paris.". F. 74v has: "xii sol. de par. nichil plus nec minus quos simpliciter [?] solvi". On the back side label, the signature reads: "P/499".

Sicut scribitur a Philosopho , decimo ethicorum, ultima felicitas hominis consistit in optima hominis operatione que est supreme potentie, scilicet intellectus respectu optimi intelligibilis.

  • Note:
Luna also tentatively proposes the title "Prologus super Physicam [?]".

  • Incipit:
