This article analyses the changes that were made between the well-known edition of all the works of Aristotle with the commentaries of Averroes published by Giunta brothers in Venice in 1550 (with a prefatory volume dated 1552), and an edition of 1562 from the same publishing house. It shows how the differences reflect the changes of interest in the time, especially in the University of Padua.

The recent (re-)publication of volumes about Avicenna allows us to revisit his central position in the history of philosophy and his overwhelming influence in Arabic, Jewish and Latin cultures: even those who disagreed with Avicenna often developed their standpoint in confrontation with him. Equally significant and deep was Averroes’ impact on the philosophical tradition: the Quaestio de anima intellectiva by Thomas Wylton is a good example in this sense, presenting one the most original reading of Averroes’ noetic in the 14th century.

Translating Catharsis: Aristotle and Averroës, the Scholastics and the Basochiens, 2012

This essay investigates translation, aesthetics and performance in the long Middle Ages, with particular emphasis on the transmission of Aristotle and the politics of festive drama: plays staged in public spaces for heterogeneous audiences during religious holidays. My main interest is κάθαρσις (katharsis), an abstruse term from the Poetics and Politics that gets translated and deployed in diverse, often incompatible ways by premodern and modern scholars and that has been used, both implicitly and explicitly, to account for the dynamics of performance and ritual in medieval festive settings. Though the Politics was widely available in Latin translation from 1260 on, its references to catharsis pertain mostly to musical aesthetics, and medieval intellectuals do not seem to have drawn from it a theory of theatrical reception. As for the Poetics, it was known almost exclusively through Averroës's Middle Commentary (1175), which Hermannus Alemannus translated into Latin in 1256. Having no understanding of Greek tragedy as theatre, Averroës, in keeping with previous Arabic readings of Aristotle, reorients the Poetics away from aesthetics towards logic. That tradition renders mimesis as the use of imaginative representations to move audiences unable to grasp more conclusive forms of reasoning to embrace the good.

The story we read in books about the Renaissance tells us that Petrarch and Poggio rediscovered the books of antiquity that had been copied for centuries in medieval abbeys. The re-introduction of Greek science and philosophy, however, began in the twelfth century but occurred mainly in the thirteenth century. These works were first translated into Syriac and Arabic in the eighth and ninth centuries and stored in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. There they were read, used, and commented on by Arab philosophers, of whom the most famous was Averroes (1126-1198), who lived in Cordoba. The translation of his commentaries on Aristotle changed the European philosophical scene profoundly. Averroes, who also had a philosophy of his own, had followers in Latin Europe until the sixteenth century. His work was well-known and he appeared in histories of philosophy until the middle of the nineteenth century, when the Arabs were pushed out of the history books. One reason was the invention of the concept of the Renaissance.

On the inside covers of Ms. 426 of the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Darmstadt (Da), one finds parchment pastedowns containing passages from the medieval Latin translation of Averroes’s Middle Commentaries on the Categories and Peri Hermeneias. The collation of these fragments shows that Da is nothing but a copy of the well-known Ms. UB Erfurt, Dep. Erf. CA. 2°, 318. Consequently, Da has no value for the critical reconstruction of the text.

William of Luna, master at the studium of Naples during the reign of the Hohenstaufens, is considered to be the author, among other translations from Arabic, of the Latin version of Averroes' Middle Commentary on the Isagoge. The Arabic text of this commentary is lost, but the translation into Hebrew, made by Jacob Anatoli, seems to reflect faithfully the syntax and word order of the original text. Now, many single terms or expressions in Anatoli's translation correspond to two terms or expressions, rather than one in the various witnesses of William of Luna's version. Are these double equivalences due to William himself, who would have then provided, here and there, more than one translation? For at least five of the eighteen cases analyzed in the present article, the question seems particularly appropriate.

The Arabic manuscript 5000 of the National Library in Madrid contains Averroes' epitomes or short commentaries on various works of Aristotle. Annotations written on the margins of the short commentary on the Physics appear to be fragments of the long commentary on this work of Aristotle. The article focuses on the fragments because they are the only evidence of the Arabic original. Further, the article considers notes written by the successive owners of the manuscript: some are written in Arabic and in Arabic letters, others in Arabic and Hebrew letters (some words are also in Hebrew) and others are written in Vulgar Latin, either in Hebrew or Latin letters.
