| The greatest ancient interpreter of Aristotle, Alexander of Aphrodisias (fl. 200 AD) exerted a profound and enduring influence upon philosophy from Boethius until the modern era. Alexander’s interpretations laid the foundation for multiple philosophical views which were promoted as quintessentially Aristotelian by both Islamic and Latin thinkers throughout the Middle Ages. In the Renaissance, the University of Padua, a leading center of philosophical education and thought, established a scholarly tradition named “Alexandrinism” after him. |

| Aristotle’s De memoria et reminiscentia (“On Memory and Recollection”) is the oldest surviving systematic study of the nature of human memory. Forming part of Aristotle’s other minor writings on psychology that were intended as a supplement to his De anima (“On the Soul”) and known under the collective title Parva naturalia, Aristotle’s De memoria et reminiscentia gave rise to a vast number of commentaries in the Middle Ages. The present volume offers new knowledge on the medieval understanding of Aristotle’s theories on memory and recollection across the linguistic traditions including the Byzantine Greek, Latin and Arabic reception. |

| Ibn Bāğğa’s commentary on Aristotle’s On Generation and Corruption (Kitāb al-Kawn wa-l-fasād, Latin De generatione et corruptione) is one of the first commentaries to elaborate on the essential aspect of Aristotle’s text, that is, the analysis of change (μεταβολή, taġayyur). The commentary’s extant parts comprise a consecutive exposition of the contents of Aristotle’s work. However, the commentary may be read more as an introduction or a guide to the topic of generation than as a substitution for the original, as the paraphrases by Averroes seem to have become in the later tradition. The present study provides a new critical edition of the Arabic text and, for the first time, an English translation and a study of the structure of the commentary on the basis of the only two known manuscripts. |

| L’analogia dell’essere attribuita ad Aristotele costituisce un tema filosofico tra i più discussi, sul quale è tornata recentemente a concentrarsi l’attenzione degli studiosi. Comprendendo un arco temporale che va dall’antichità all’età contemporanea, il tema permette di essere trattato da molteplici prospettive, aprendo il campo alla collaborazione fra esperti di epoche e discipline diverse. Il volume contiene i testi più significativi relativamente alla nascita e allo sviluppo della dottrina dell’analogia dell’essere. I passi sono riportati a fronte con traduzioni originali annotate e sono raccolti in due sezioni: quella di filosofia antica e tardoantica e quella di filosofia medievale araba e latina. La prima sezione comprende i principali testi aristotelici che della dottrina dell’analogia dell’essere hanno costituito l’origine, e i passi fra i più rilevanti della tradizione commentaristica antica e tardoantica, da Alessandro di Afrodisia (II-III sec. d.C) a Simplicio di Cilicia (VI sec. d.C.), nei quali è possibile individuare le prime fasi dello sviluppo di tale dottrina. La sezione di filosofia medievale araba e latina comprende passi scelti dei filosofi che rappresentano le tappe essenziali dello sviluppo della dottrina dell’analogia dell’essere nel medioevo arabo e latino, da al-Fārābī (m. 950 c.) a Tommaso d’Aquino (XIII sec.) a Tommaso de Vio, il “Gaetano” (XV-XVI sec.). Oltre a fornire un utile strumento per la ricostruzione delle origini dell’attribuzione dell’analogia dell’essere ad Aristotele, il volume individua nei testi riportati l’imprescindibile base per ulteriori sviluppi di tale dottrina nella metafisica contemporanea. |

More broadly, the study of this early phase of the Hebrew translation movement also reveals that the formation of a standardized Hebrew terminology was a long process that was never fully completed. | The annual colloquium of the SIEPM in Freiburg, Germany, was groundbreaking in that it featured a more or less equal number of talks on all three medieval cultures that contributed to the formation of Western philosophical thought: the Islamic, Jewish, and Christian traditions. Indeed, the subject of the colloquium, ‘The Origin and Nature of Language and Logic in Medieval Islamic, Jewish, and Christian Thought’, lent itself to such a cross-cultural approach. In all these traditions, partially inspired by ancient Greek philosophy, partially by other sources, language and thought, semantics and logic occupied a central place. As a result, the chapters of the present volume effortlessly traverse philosophical, religious, cultural, and linguistic boundaries and thus in many respects open up new perspectives. It should not be surprising if readers delight in chapters of a philosophical tradition outside of their own as much as they do in those in their area of expertise. Among the topics discussed are the significance of language for logic; the origin of language: inspiration or convention; imposition or coinage; the existence of an original language; the correctness of language; divine discourse; animal language; the meaningfulness of animal sounds; music as communication; the scope of dialectical disputation; the relation between rhetoric and demonstration; the place of logic and rhetoric in theology; the limits of human knowledge; the meaning of categories; the problem of metaphysical entailment; the need to disentangle the metaphysical implications of language; the quantification of predicates; and the significance of linguistic custom for judging logical propositions. |

| Depuis la séparation entre médecine et philosophie traditionnellement attribuée à Hippocrate, les relations entre ces disciplines ont toujours été intenses et parfois conflictuelles. C’est une histoire de ces rapports que proposent les quinze études réunies dans cet ouvrage, en se centrant sur quelques figures ou moments déterminants: Platon, Aristote, Galien, les écoles empirique et méthodiste, al-Rāzī, Averroès, le XVIe siècle italien, Locke, Kant, Cabanis, les philosophes-médecins de la IIIe République, Canguilhem ou encore Jaspers. Si aujourd’hui la demande adressée à la philosophie par les médecins concerne principalement l’éthique, le dialogue entre les deux disciplines a porté historiquement d’abord sur le statut épistémologique de la médecine : le meilleur médecin est-il nécessairement philosophe ? Que peut apprendre la philosophie de la méthode du médecin ? La médecine est-elle un art du cas singulier, une science ou les deux ? En s’inscrivant dans le temps long, ces études rappellent que l’institutionnalisation actuelle de la philosophie de la médecine s’accompagne parfois d’un oubli des origines historiques de la réflexion sur la médecine. Le contact avec la médecine conduisant aussi la philosophie à se souvenir qu’elle se définit comme un genre de vie, c’est la question de l’amélioration du bien-être et de la santé des hommes qui se pose alors, dans un environnement que l’introduction de techniques thérapeutiques nouvelles modifie en permanence. |

| In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle suggests that a moral principle ‘does not immediately appear to the man who has been corrupted by pleasure or pain’. Phantasia in Aristotle’s Ethics investigates his claim and its reception in ancient and medieval Aristotelian traditions, including Arabic, Greek, Hebrew and Latin. While contemporary commentators on the Ethics have overlooked Aristotle’s remark, his ancient and medieval interpreters made substantial contributions towards a clarification of the claim’s meaning and relevance. Even when the hazards of transmission have left no explicit comments on this particular passage, as is the case in the Arabic tradition, medieval responders still offer valuable interpretations of phantasia (appearance) and its role in ethical deliberation and action. This volume casts light on these readings, showing how the distant voices from the medieval Arabic, Greek, Hebrew and Latin Aristotelian traditions still contribute to contemporary debate concerning phantasia, motivation and deliberation in Aristotle’s Ethics. |

| Ibn Bāğğa’s commentary on Aristotle’s On Generation and Corruption (Kitāb al-Kawn wa-l-fasād, Latin De generatione et corruptione) is one of the first commentaries to elaborate on the essential aspect of Aristotle’s text, that is, the analysis of change (μεταβολή, taġayyur). The commentary’s extant parts comprise a consecutive exposition of the contents of Aristotle’s work. However, the commentary may be read more as an introduction or a guide to the topic of generation than as a substitution for the original, as the paraphrases by Averroes seem to have become in the later tradition. The present study provides a new critical edition of the Arabic text and, for the first time, an English translation and a study of the structure of the commentary on the basis of the only two known manuscripts. |

| The greatest ancient interpreter of Aristotle, Alexander of Aphrodisias (fl. 200 AD) exerted a profound and enduring influence upon philosophy from Boethius until the modern era. Alexander’s interpretations laid the foundation for multiple philosophical views which were promoted as quintessentially Aristotelian by both Islamic and Latin thinkers throughout the Middle Ages. In the Renaissance, the University of Padua, a leading center of philosophical education and thought, established a scholarly tradition named “Alexandrinism” after him. |

| La traduction arabo-latine attribuee a Guillaume de Luna (debut ou milieu du XIIIe siecle?) du commentaire moyen d'Averroes sur la Logica vetus a fait l'objet en 1996 d'un premier volume: curieusement peut-etre, il proposait l'edition du texte de la troisieme uvre concernee, le Peri Hermeneias ou De interpretatione (Averrois opera, Series B: Averroes latinus, XII). Le present volume (Averrois opera, Series B: Averroes latinus, XI) poursuit l'edition dudit commentaire dans la meme traduction arabo-latine et porte, non sur la premiere uvre de la trilogie: l'Isagoge, mais sur la deuxieme: les Categories ou Predicaments. A peine impliquee dans des citations d'auteurs, l'oeuvre n'est plus connue que par six manuscrits; s' y ajoutent douze editions des XVe et XVIe siecles. La presente edition ressemble a la precedente du commentaire du Peri Hermeneias au moins sous quatre rapports: 1. une comparaison systematique de la version latine medievale du commentaire d'Averroes avec la version hebraique correspondante a ete exclue, ces deux versions ne pouvant etre qu'independantes l'une de l'autre; 2. dans l'apparat comparatif de la version latine avec l'original arabe, les mots arabes sont imprimes en arabe, puis retraduits en latin dans la langue meme du traducteur, sur base d'une etude systematique de la terminologie utilisee dans la traduction; 3. les lexiques sur lesquels s'appuie cette etude de la terminologie, rendent compte d'a peu pres toutes les equivalences arabo-latines etablies par le traducteur, et non, parmi celles-ci, d'une categorie particuliere ne reprenant, par exemple, que les concepts philosophiques; 4. dans les lexiques, les mots arabes sont transcrits en caracteres latins: certaines verifications sont ainsi accessibles aux lecteurs non arabisants; quant aux arabisants, la vocalisation qu'implique la transcription leur signale comment, en fonction de l'interpretation supposee avoir ete celle du traducteur medieval, le referent arabe a de nouveau ete relu et compris. |

| The present volume brings together thirteen articles as so many chapters of a book, devoted to the history, methods, and practices of the commentaries that have been written on Aristotle’s Rhetoric. Examining both the linguistic and factual background, these contributions attempt to insert each of the commentaries into its particular historical, political, social, philosophical, and pedagogical context. The historical periods and geographical areas that arise – from Greco-Roman antiquity to Heidegger’s philosophy, from the Syriac and Arabic traditions to the Western world – make it possible, in sum, not only to indicate how the Rhetoric has been read and interpreted, but also to offer general perspectives on the practice of explicating ancient texts. |

| L’analogia dell’essere attribuita ad Aristotele costituisce un tema filosofico tra i più discussi, sul quale è tornata recentemente a concentrarsi l’attenzione degli studiosi. Comprendendo un arco temporale che va dall’antichità all’età contemporanea, il tema permette di essere trattato da molteplici prospettive, aprendo il campo alla collaborazione fra esperti di epoche e discipline diverse. Il volume contiene i testi più significativi relativamente alla nascita e allo sviluppo della dottrina dell’analogia dell’essere. I passi sono riportati a fronte con traduzioni originali annotate e sono raccolti in due sezioni: quella di filosofia antica e tardoantica e quella di filosofia medievale araba e latina. La prima sezione comprende i principali testi aristotelici che della dottrina dell’analogia dell’essere hanno costituito l’origine, e i passi fra i più rilevanti della tradizione commentaristica antica e tardoantica, da Alessandro di Afrodisia (II-III sec. d.C) a Simplicio di Cilicia (VI sec. d.C.), nei quali è possibile individuare le prime fasi dello sviluppo di tale dottrina. La sezione di filosofia medievale araba e latina comprende passi scelti dei filosofi che rappresentano le tappe essenziali dello sviluppo della dottrina dell’analogia dell’essere nel medioevo arabo e latino, da al-Fārābī (m. 950 c.) a Tommaso d’Aquino (XIII sec.) a Tommaso de Vio, il “Gaetano” (XV-XVI sec.). Oltre a fornire un utile strumento per la ricostruzione delle origini dell’attribuzione dell’analogia dell’essere ad Aristotele, il volume individua nei testi riportati l’imprescindibile base per ulteriori sviluppi di tale dottrina nella metafisica contemporanea. |

| Aristotle’s De memoria et reminiscentia (“On Memory and Recollection”) is the oldest surviving systematic study of the nature of human memory. Forming part of Aristotle’s other minor writings on psychology that were intended as a supplement to his De anima (“On the Soul”) and known under the collective title Parva naturalia, Aristotle’s De memoria et reminiscentia gave rise to a vast number of commentaries in the Middle Ages. The present volume offers new knowledge on the medieval understanding of Aristotle’s theories on memory and recollection across the linguistic traditions including the Byzantine Greek, Latin and Arabic reception. |
