The studies presented in this volume discuss the reception of prominent theories by Avicenna from the early 11th century onwards by thinkers like Averroes, Fahraddin ar-Razi, Samuel ibn Tibbon or Albertus Magnus. Among the topics which receive particular attention are the definition and existence of motion and time. Other important topics are covered too, such as Avicenna’s theories of vacuum, causality, elements, substantial change, minerals, floods and mountains. It emerges, among other things, that Avicenna inherited to the discussion an acute sense for the epistemological status of natural science and for the mental and concrete existence of its objects. The volume also addresses the philological and historical circumstances of the textual tradition and sheds light on the translators Dominicus Gundisalvi, Avendauth and Alfred of Sareshel in particular.
The articles of this volume are presented by scholars who convened in 2013 to discuss their research on the influence of Avicenna’s physics and cosmology in the Villa Vigoni, Italy.
[2018]}

Perceived in different historical periods and in different cultural forms either as a conflict or as a vital coexistence, the reason/no-reason pair was first theorized and legitimated as a sharp contrast in antiquity with the Pythagorean systoichiai, and at the dawn of the twentieth century it was successfully exemplified by Nietzsche through the opposition between Apollonian and Dionysian principles, which denotes respectively the harmonious, orderly, 'bright' side of the human soul, and the chaotic one, wild, instinctive, passionate, 'dark'. This volume is the outcome of the work of an international research group, which intended to cover some aspects of this dichotomy with the specific end to prove that the two sides of the human 'soul' don't contradict each other - in such a way that one excludes, ontologically and axiologically, the other - but they are rather closely interrelated and interdependent. Scholars with different expertise in the history of thought tackled diachronically some key moments of this story, from different angles and with different approaches, from ancient thought to modern neurosciences. The volume contains contributions of Krzysztof Brzechczyn (Institute of Philosophy, Adam Mickiewicz University), R. Loredana Cardullo (University of Catania), Francesco Coniglione (University of Catania), Santo Di Nuovo (University of Catania), Daniele Iozzia (University of Catania), Syliane Malinowski-Charles (Université du Québec à Trois Rivière), Concetto Martello (University of Catania), Alexandra Michalewski (Paris - Sorbonne, CNRS), Chiara Militello (University of Catania), Sebastian Moro Tornese (United Kingdom), Jean-Marc Narbonne (Laval Université, Canada), Anne Sheppard (Royal Holloway, University of London), Salvatore Vasta (University of Catania), Andrea Vella (University of Catania).
[2017]}

This article examines Ibn Bāǧǧa’s (Avempace) interpretation of the first two chapters of the eighth book of Aristotle’s Physics and what he has in mind when he describes Aristotle’s proof as a demonstration of the eternity of motion “in genus.” His approach in the second appendix to book eight differs from the one he develops in the main commentary. In the former text, Ibn Bāǧǧa works on the distinction between essential and accidental successions, which leads him to realize that the accidental and thus possible successions— horizontal approach—are not sufficient to guarantee the eternity of movement and then to adopt a vertical approach that goes back to the numerical identity of the circular continuous motion. We show to what extent Ibn Bāǧǧa’s interpretation is indebted to Al-Fārābī’s lost treatise On Changing Beings and also aim to highlight the role of this reading in the evolution of Averroes’ interpretation. |

This book examines the question whether medieval Muslim philosophers Avicenna (Arabic Ibn Sīnā 980-1037) and Averroes (Arabic Ibn Rushd 1126-1198) are determinists. With a focus on physics and metaphysics it studies their views on chance events in nature, as well as matter, in particular prime matter, and divine providence. In addition it sets their positions against the historical/philosophical background that influenced their response, the Greco-Arabic philosophical tradition - Aristotelian and Neoplatonic - on the one hand, and the tradition of Islamic theology (kalām) on the other. In comparing their philosophical systems, it lays emphasis on the way in which Avicenna and Averroes use these traditions to offer an original answer to the problem of determinism. |

The Arabic manuscript 5000 of the National Library in Madrid contains Averroes' epitomes or short commentaries on various works of Aristotle. Annotations written on the margins of the short commentary on the Physics appear to be fragments of the long commentary on this work of Aristotle. The article focuses on the fragments because they are the only evidence of the Arabic original. Further, the article considers notes written by the successive owners of the manuscript: some are written in Arabic and in Arabic letters, others in Arabic and Hebrew letters (some words are also in Hebrew) and others are written in Vulgar Latin, either in Hebrew or Latin letters. |

The essence of the theory of minima naturalia is the contention that a physical body is not infinitely divisible qua that specific body. A drop of water cannot be divided again and again and still maintain its “wateriness”. There are several statements in Aristotle's Physics which suggest such an interpretation, and the theory of minima naturalia is commonly considered to have originated in the thirteenth century as an interpretation of these statements. The present paper is a preliminary presentation of the role of Ibn Rushd in the evolution of the theory, hitherto neglected. His theory developed not only as an elaboration on the "suitable" statements of Aristotle, but mainly as an attempt to solve the difficulties raised by Aristotle's thesis (developed in PhysicsVI and VII) that body and motion are continuous, infinitely divisible entities and are associated qua such. According to Ibn Rushd's interpretation, body and motion are associated not qua being continuous but qua having indivisible minimal parts. It seems that Epicurus' and Ibn Rushd's theories of minima developed as responses to Physics VI and offer modifications of classical atomism and of classical Aristotelianism (respectively), which to a certain extent reduce the gap between these two systems. |
