This chapter explores the implications of Averroes’ firm commitment to empiricism and his conviction that an empirically based science can achieve proper demonstrative certitude, in opposition to Ashʿarite voluntarism, which makes all natural events dependent on the untrammeled will of God. Against this Averroes wants to show that through sense-experience we are able to grasp the powers of natural causes, powers that are possessed and yield their effects necessarily, as demanded in demonstrative science.

An analysis of Averroes' treatise Exposition (Kashf) of the Methods Used in Religion, arguing that he adopts a "zahirite" approach in response to Islamic theology: Scripture should be taken at face value by most people, and simply accepted as dogma. Only philosophers are in a position to set constraints for the correct nonliteral interpretation of Scripture.

Averroes seeks to ground philosophical theology in Aristotelian premises, by reconciling the treatment of God in metaphysics as a pure intellect with the portrayal of God in Aristotle's Physics as a cause of heavenly motion. Averroes’ solution to this problem appeals to the central Aristotelian distinction between four kinds of cause, namely formal, final, efficient, and material. In physics He is approached as an efficient cause of motion, while in metaphysics He appears as an efficient, formal, and final cause of being and unity.

An investigation of Averroes' theory of reasoning in law, showing that his legal epistemology is deeply indebted to the Aristotelian tradition and, in particular, to al-Fārābī’s understanding of analogical reasoning which was in turn based on the idea of an exemplum (mithāl), taken from Aristotle’s logical works and especially the Rhetoric.

Averroes was a foundationalist who thought that knowledge in the strict sense must be grounded in certain first principles which are in turn derived (only) from sense-experience. We can have certainty about contingent truths and on the basis of individual encounters rather than only through induction from many experiences. The chapter also discusses the low assessment of evidence given by beliefs acquired through testimony.

A study of “philosophy of law” in Averroes, showing that he assimilates the methods and epistemic status of juridical reasoning to those of rhetoric, so that legal proofs are akin to cases of rhetorical persuasion. Since legal conviction is thus always merely probable, Averroes is able to develop a notion of law as evolving and needing constant correction, as befits a system of norms that applies to changing human circumstance.

A study of Averroes' paraphrase commentary on the Nicomachean Ethics, which is preserved only in Hebrew and Latin. Averroes here explores the relationship between ethics and political philosophy and identifies a theoretical strand within ethics, in order to show that practical philosophy is a proper science.

A widespread historiographic commonplace, established by Thomas Aquinas himself in his Tractatus de unitate intellectus (1270), takes Siger of Brabant’s Quaestiones in tertium de anima (ca. 1265) to be a latin formulation of Ibn Rušd’s theory of the unity of the material intellect as exposed in the Tafsīr Kitāb al-Nafs (Long Commentary on the De anima, ca. 1186); according to the same view, Aquinas’ philosophy of mind would be the expression of a strongly antiaverroistic – and therefore more orthodox – kind of aristotelianism. Building on a thorough analysis of key texts in Aquinas’ Commentary on the Sentences (1255), I argue in this paper that those who hold Aquinas’ noetic to be anti-averroistic are greatly mistaken: while Siger’s always superficial rushdian inspiration is better understood against the background of a neoplatonic-tinged mind-body dualism clearly at odds with Ibn Rušd’s own strictly peripatetic ontology, Aquinas’ psychology, hylomorfic and not-dualist at its core, is aristotelian mainly inasmuch as it is rushdian.

The contributions connect thinkers from antiquity through the Middle Ages and include philosophers from the three major monotheistic faiths—Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.

By emphasizing premodern philosophy’s shared textual roots in antiquity, particularly the writings of Plato and Aristotle, the volume highlights points of cross-pollination between different schools, cultures, and moments in premodern thought. Approaching the complex history of the premodern world in an accessible way, the editors organize the volume so as to underscore the difficulties the premodern period poses for scholars, while accentuating the fascinating interplay between the Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and Latin philosophical traditions. The contributors cover many topics ranging from the aims of Aristotle’s cosmos, the adoption of Aristotle’s Organon by al-Fārābī, and the origins of the Plotiniana Arabica to the role of Ibn Gabirol’s Fons vitae in the Latin West, the ways in which Islamic philosophy shaped thirteenth-century Latin conceptions of light, Roger Bacon’s adaptation of Avicenna for use in his moral philosophy, and beyond.
