Georges Vajda (1908-1981) fut un éminent spécialiste des études juives et arabes du Moyen Age. Son oeuvre publiée est importante et reconnue, mais des études restaient encore dans l'ombre. Le présent recueil rassemble vingt-six essais sur l'histoire intellectuelle juive et arabe au Moyen Age, publiées tout au long de sa carrière dans des revues d'accès souvent difficile. Etudes parfois pionnières, elles ont représenté le point de départ de ses recherches sur des auteurs ou des ouvrages qu'il a contribué à introduire dans l'histoire de la pensée médiévale, et sur lesquels il reviendra pendant toute sa vie. C'est le cas de l'article sur le Livre des croyances et des opinions de Saadia Gaon et de celui sur son commentaire sur le Livre de la Création dont les pénétrantes hypothèses ont contribué à renouveler l'intérêt concernant cet auteur. Il en est ainsi de deux autres études, l'une sur Qirqisani et l'autre sur al-Muqammis qui ont ouvert la piste d'une analyse renouvelée de l'histoire religieuse du judaïsme aux IXe et Xe siècles, chantier sur lequel Vajda n'a jamais cessé de travailler. Cet ouvrage s'adresse aux philosophes, historiens et linguistes qui s'intéressent aux fondements de l'histoire de la philosophie médiévale, nourrie par les pensées chrétienne, musulmane et juive. Les études ici réunies représentent également un jalon dans l'histoire de l'orientalisme des XIXe et XXe siècles. Aux chercheurs et au grand public cultivé est ainsi offert un recueil qui procure accès à des recherches poursuivies par Vajda pendant plus d'un demi-siècle. |

Responding to the accusations of the Ašʿarite theologian al-Ġazālī, in his Decisive Treatise Averroes champions the practice of philosophy, using legal and scriptural arguments. In this article, I wish to place these arguments within the context of legal theory, a discipline to which Averroes devoted one of his earliest treatises, the Abridgment of al-Mustaṣfā . A comparison of these two texts allows us to identify the origin of some arguments of the Decisive Treatise, concerning the taxonomy of errors and the social organization of knowledge. My aim is to set Averroes’ reflection within a continuity of the Islamic meta-legal tradition that provided him with the necessary tools for his conceptualization of the philosopher’s place within society. |

In his commentary on Metaphysics IX 3, Averroes draws an analogy between the Megarian conception of dunamis, presented and refuted by Aristotle, and that of the Ashʿarites theologians. The study of the Arabic translation of lemmatas of Aristotle’s text (1047a26-28) and of the reformulation by Averroes of the third argument against the Megarians shows a shift commanded by theological issues: since the omnipotence of God can now bypass natural powers, the question of who possess the power should be added to that of its sole possession. |

This article is devoted to the biological phenomenon of female sexual pleasure and aims at determining its causal role in Aristotle’s biological doctrine. In considering several passages of the De Generatione Animalium, the author suggests that female sexual pleasure is one of the phenomena that Aristotle defines as “for what is better”. The study of this phenomenon provides the opportunity to rethink the place of the final cause in Aristotle’s causal system and the nature of the so-called “derivative” teleology. In the second part of the study, the author provides an overview of the Greco-Arabic reception of Aristotle’s doctrine. The study of the debate prompted by Averroes against Galen in the xiith century AD shows the importance of the issue of female sexual pleasure in the Greco-Arabic peripatetism and clarifies in turn the doctrine of the Stagyrite. |

The notion of “per se” (καθ’ αὑτό) is one of the key elements of Aristotle’s ontology and epistemology. Nowhere, however, does Aristotle provide a systematic study of it, leaving the articulation of its different meanings and the significance of the general project in which this notion is inscribed unclear. This paper aims to study the interpretation that Averroes provides of this notion in his Long Commentary on the Posterior Analytics. In translating for the first time some long quotations of this commentary into a modern language, we will show the central role that this notion plays in Averroes’ scientific theory and in particular in his theory of demonstration of sign. |

This paper aims to outline the historical debate about the Averroes’ heritage since its beginning, with the revival of Averroes by French Orientalism (Renan) coming up to contemporary Arab-Muslim intellectuals, who made this author an Enlightenment’s representative before its time. The aim of the contribution is therefore to recall briefly the history of this debate to highlight the political and ideological utilization of a medieval author and, ultimately, to emphasize that every history of philosophy implies a view oriented and never neutral on its tradition. |

In contemporary political discourse, the "clash of civilizations" rhetoric often undergirds philosophical analyses of "democracy" both at home and abroad. This is nowhere better articulated than in Jacques Derrida's Rogues, in which he describes Islam as the only religious or theocratic culture that would "inspire and declare any resistance to democracy" (Derrida 2005, 29). Curiously, Derrida attributes the failings of democracy in Islam to the lack of reference to Aristotle's Politics in the writings of the medieval Muslim philosophers. This paper aims to analyze this gross misconception of Islamic philosophy and illuminate the thoroughgoing influence the Muslim philosophers had on their Christian successors, those who are so often credited as foundations of Western political philosophy. In so doing, I compare the ideal states presented by Averroes and Dante – in which Aristotelian influence is intimately interlaced – and offer an analysis thereof as heralds of what we might call the secularization of the political, inspiring those democratic values that Derrida believes to be absent in the rich philosophy of the Middle Ages. |

Aristoteles' De Anima ist einer der zentralen Texte der Philosophiegeschichte. Seine grundlegende Leistung liegt in der alle Lebewesen umfassenden ontologisch-ontischen Bestimmung der Seele und ihrer Vermögen, einschließlich der Lehre vom Geist (nous), deren nähere Explikation seit der Antike Anlaß zu vielfältigen Diskussionen gab. Die vorliegende Studie ermittelt unter Rückgriff auf die traditionellen Schulen des Alexandrismus, Neuplatonismus, Averroismus und Thomismus diejenigen mannigfaltigen philosophischen und theologischen Konstellationen des 16. und 17. Jh.s, die von innerkatholischen wie interkonfessionellen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Katholiken, Lutheranern und Calvinisten geprägt waren. Unter diesem Gesichtspunkt werden die entsprechenden Werke der Reformatoren Luther und Melanchthon, der Renaissance-Aristoteliker Portio, Toletus, Zabarella und die Conimbrincenser sowie die hier erstmals berücksichtigten Schriften der lutherischen und calvinistischen Schulphilosophen des 17. Jh.s. interpretiert. |

De 1990 à 2016, Danielle Jacquart, directeur d’études à l’Ecole pratique des hautes études, à la section des Sciences historiques et philologiques, a, dans sa conférence, exploré la science et la médecine du Moyen Age à travers une grande variété de thèmes qui très souvent s’interrogeaient sur la façon dont l’homme, corps et âme, avait été au coeur des préoccupations intellectuelles et pratiques des savants à travers des savoirs mettant en jeu sa place dans la nature et, au-delà, dans le monde. Ce volume d’hommage réunit les contributions d’élèves et d’amis de ce séminaire, donnant un aperçu de la richesse de cet enseignement. Spécialistes de l’histoire des sciences, de la philosophie ou de la littérature médiévales, ces derniers évoquent la transmission de la science grecque et arabe au monde latin, abordent des savoirs scientifiques spécifiques – mathématiques et optique, cosmologie et astrologie –, se penchent sur la théorie médicale et la philosophie naturelle, s’aventurent dans des domaines sollicitant le discours scientifique – cuisine, alchimie, réflexions littéraires –, ou bien cernent le milieu médical dans les cours ou dans les villes. |

Depuis le Moyen Âge, le Grand Commentaire d’Averroès au De anima d’Aristote n’était connu des philosophes occidentaux que dans sa version latine, datant du XIIIe siècle. Des gloses en arabe dictées à des élèves philosophes juifs et espagnols au XVe siècle, ont été transcrites en caractères hébraïques et conservées dans un manuscrit de la Bibliothèque Estense de Modène. Le texte de ces gloses n’est pas identique à l’original arabe traduit en latin, mais elles portent témoignage de versions multiples et différentes. L’édition de la partie du Commentaire traitant de l’intellect est proposée ici. |

La presente edición recoge una serie de trabajos de investigadores contemporáneos sobre el tema de la filosofía de las pasiones tal como se encuentran en diversos pensadores medievales, tanto de paganos y cristianos, como de judíos y árabes. Es de notar, en el conjunto de estos escritos, el carácter pluridimensional de esta central experiencia humana, ya que cualesquiera sea el estilo literario de fondo y la motivación psicológica de los diversos géneros y escuelas, en todo período histórico ha existido una preocupación permanente por la cuestión de las pasiones. Esta preocupación revela esencialmente la constitución del ser humano (officina omnium) y su ineludible circunstancia histórica, que es ante todo expresión ética, como también política y social. No obstante, lo propio en esta investigación (istorié, en sentido original), es que nos invita a una lectura renovada y cautivadora, pues su temática refleja naturalmente la experiencia vital propia del medioevo occidental, cuyo hondo cuestionamiento en torno a la cuestión de las pasiones no es sino un esencial preguntarse por nuestra relación con nosotros mismos y con todas las formas de alteridad. Por último, este volumen, con formato de artículos monográficos en distintas lenguas modernas, está orientado tanto para lectores especialistas como para todo público culto en general que se interese por el mundo De Las Pasiones en la Filosofía Medieval. |

The notion of ὑπόκρισις (hypokrisis) was employed for the first time with the meaning of “rhetorical delivery” in Aristotle’s Rhetoric, where it is the target of a short and highly critical analysis. A practice borrowed directly from the theatre, and apparently resistant to any form of technicisation that might give it a legitimate place alongside the other means of rhetorical persuasion, ὑπόκρισις (hypokrisis) was nevertheless extremely effective–as Aristotle acknowledged with undisguised irritation. In the face of Aristotle’s ambivalence, and torn between a purist and idealist conception of rhetoric on the one hand, and the contemporary reality of speech, which required him to recognise a practice of which he could not approve, on the other, what was Averroes’ attitude in his Middle Commentary on the Rhetoric? Dependent on the Arabic version of the Rhetoric where the term ὑπόκρισις (hypokrisis) was – with one exception – translated by the expression أخذ بالوجوه (aḫḏ bi-l-wuǧūh) – “the taking of faces” –, has Averroes followed Aristotle in his hesitations and reticences? Or has he instead chosen to legitimise the use of hypokrisis in rhetorical technique? The analysis of the Rushdian interpretation of the ‘taking of faces’ will allow a better understanding of Averroes’ exegetical method, and grasp of what it meant, to him, to be faithful to the First Master. |

Averroës (Ibn Rushd, 1126-1198) emerged from an eminent family in Muslim Spain to become the first and last great Aristotelian of the classical Islamic world; his meticulous commentaries influenced Christian thinkers and earned him favorable mention (and a relatively pleasant fate) in Dante’s Divina Commedia. The Book of the Decisive Treatise was and remains one his most important works and one of history’s best defenses of the legitimate role of reason in a community of faith. The text presents itself as a plea before a tribunal in which the divinely revealed Law of Islam is the sole authority; Averroës, critical of the anti-philosophical tone of the Islamic establishment, argues that the Law not only permits but also mandates the study of philosophy and syllogistic or logical reasoning, defending earlier Muslim philosophers and dismissing criticisms of them as more harmful to the Islamic community than the philosophers’ own views had been. As he details the three fundamental methods the Law uses to aid people of varied capacities and temperaments, Averroës reveals a carefully formed and remarkably argued conception of the boundaries and uses of faith and reason. |
