That the doctrine of the five internal senses plays an important role in Ramon Llull’s Liber contemplationis is already evident from the position it occupies, literally at the centre of the book; but what is Llull’s concept of the internal senses? Which traditions influenced his thought? Or is this merely another example of his intellectual independence and, at the same time, his eccentricity with respect to his historical environment? With this problematic in mind, the goal of the present contribution is to analyze the essential features of Llull’s doctrine of the internal senses and to discuss them against the background of the prevailing theories of his time. In this connection, it will first address the theory of the internal senses, which stemmed from Arabic-Peripatetic philosophy and was known in the Latin West from the late twelfth century onwards. It will focus secondly on the doctrine of the spiritual senses, which had been present in the Latin West since the Patristic period and gained particular significance in the theology of Llull’s time. As will be shown through two case studies (of the internal senses of conscientia and subtilitas), despite its uniqueness, Llull’s view was not simply irreconcilable with contemporary academic discourse; it is rather distinguished by its original way of bringing together the most disparate elements, partly traditional, partly current, partly philosophical, partly theological. Thus, regardless of its eclecticism, Llull’s concept of contemplation – the main theme of his book – constitutes also its unifying moment: nothing less than its ‘anatomy’ is under debate in his discussion of the five internal senses, which moreover explains, on the level of content, the formal centrality of this thematic in the Liber contemplationis.

The aim of this article is to give a new reconstruction of the conception of human dignity as a pre-associative yet legal status. Such a legal conception of human dignity carries a universal legal obligation to respect the “innate” right to independence and enables us to move beyond the impasse between moral and political views of human rights. The argument has a normative and a genealogical component. The normative component shows why a legal conception of human rights is grounded on the Kantian idea of an innate legal right to independence, as well as showing that Kant adopted a legal status concept of human dignity. The genealogical component shows that the conception of human dignity as legal status undergoes a transvaluation from its ancient aristocratic to its modern democratic meaning in Dante's political thought, which is itself rooted in the western reception of Arabic philosophy, in particular political Averroism. By contrast to the Christian elaboration of dignity, the Averroist genealogy of dignity better describes the modern pursuit of an ideal of worldly happiness essentially linked with the collective attainment of public happiness through the unrestricted public use of reason facilitated by republican constitutions crowned by human rights.

In this short analysis, we will compare Ibn Rushd's justification of the causality principle to the suspicions and objections of al-Ghazālī. Nevertheless, our analysis of the issue will center on al-Ghazālī's and Ibn Rushd's conceptions of nature. Therefore, our article aims at illuminating two points: first, there is a fundamental difference between the conceptions of nature and generation of the two philosophers; second, this structural difference constitutes the real cause of disagreement over the causality principle.

Does Each of Us Think Our Own Universal? An Averroean Challenge for (Aquinas and) Hervaeus Natalis, 2022

This paper aims to address a problem faced by any philosopher who treats universals as intentional objects: in defending this thesis, aren't they committed to the view that each of us thinks an individuated universal, since each of us, when thinking of a universal, must have our own intentional object? This problem, which is mentioned by Brentano at the turn of the twentieth century, originated in the Middle Ages in debates initiated by Averroes about the nature of the intellect. It shows up in the later Aquinas, due to his theory of the verbum, which might be interpreted as a sort of intentional object, but it is solved without too much difficulty. It is later found in Hervaeus Natalis, who does accept intentional objects; in contrast to Aquinas, it is not clear that Hervaeus has a good solution to the problem. After first presenting the problem, this paper then turns to its medieval origins by analyzing its occurrence in Aquinas's criticism of Averroes. It then explains why Hervaeus has more difficulties than Aquinas in solving the problem. It concludes with a systematic reflection on the various possible solutions to the problem.
