The Greek heritage nourished and deeply influenced a philosophical tradition in Arabic. This Greek heritage was reinterpreted by Muslim philosophers during the period from the ninth to the twelfth century. The approach by the latter, called falāsifa, towards the question of prophecy will have a decisive influence on certain Ashʿarite theologians, and the Avicennian synthesis constitutes a major step in the constitution of an Islamic prophetology, so that one may consider that there is a before and an after Avicenna, with regard to the doctrine of prophecy in the Muslim world. It is not possible to outline the contours of a prophetology that would be common to all falāsifa: Al-Kindī (after 870), Abū Bakr al-Rāzī (864–925), al-Fārābī (d. 950), Avicenna (980–1037), Ibn Bājja (around 1138), Ibn Ṭufayl (1110–1185) and Averroes (1126–1198). Nevertheless, despite their differences and their disagreements, they have tried to rationally report the phenomenon of prophecy, integrating it – for some of them – into a complex emanative cosmology. Finally, and despite their differences, we find in Avicenna and in Averroes the affirmation of the ethical and political function of the prophet.

The three-volume series titled The Presence of the Prophet in Early Modern and Contemporary Islam, is the first attempt to explore the dynamics of the representation of the Prophet Muhammad in the course of Muslim history until the present. This first collective volume outlines his figure in the early Islamic tradition, and its later transformations until recent times that were shaped by Prophet-centered piety and politics. A variety of case studies offers a unique overview of the interplay of Sunnī amd Shīʿī doctrines with literature and arts in the formation of his image. They trace the integrative and conflictual qualities of a “Prophetic culture”, in which the Prophet of Islam continues his presence among the Muslim believers.

Le Compendium du livre De l’âme d’Aristote (Muḫtaṣar Kitāb al-nafs) compte parmi les premières œuvres d’exégète d’Averroès. On en traduit ici le chapitre sur l’intellect qui contient l’essentiel des questions sur lesquelles le Commentateur reviendra dans toute son œuvre. Ce qui l’occupe est d’établir si l’acte de l’intellect humain est permanent ou bien intermittent, et plus largement de savoir si notre puissance rationnelle est elle-même éternelle ou bien engendrée et corruptible. L’auteur montre que nos concepts sont en vérité ambivalents et que s’ils sont en partie soustraits au temps par leur sens, leur rapport aux images leur confère une forme de potentialité. C’est sur cette puissance que l’accent est mis : quelle est la nature de la capacité de penser? quel peut-être son substrat? qu’est-ce qui la meut, et jusqu’où? L’édition du texte par David Wirmer montre qu’il fut plusieurs fois révisé et son intérêt est double. Il montre à la fois quelle fut la doctrine du jeune Averroès, disciple de son prédécesseur andalou Ibn Bāğğa (Avempace), et comment le Cordouan inlassablement critique devait juger bon de la réviser. Averroès est connu dans l’histoire comme l’auteur du Grand Commentaire du traité De l’âme. C’est dans ce texte du Compendium qu’on voit s’en profiler la doctrine.

The historiographical rediscovery of Averroes’ thought in the 19th century coincided with its reading in a materialistic sense. From Renan to Bloch, via Lange and Gentile, this interpretation has been widespread, making the Arab thinker a precursor of modern rationalism and immanentism. Although in the 20th century more philologically accurate research has challenged this long-standing image of Averroes, it continues to persist in current debates, at the risk of some misrepresentation. This article attempts a critical assessment of such interpretations in light of the more recent tendency to focus on «historical» Averroes, assuming that this may contribute to the debate on the meaning of Averroism in the history of Western ideas.

In an effort to refute Avicenna’s real distinction between essence and existence, Averroes argues for an Instantiation Analysis of existence which thinks of existence not as an accidental addition to an essence, but rather as the recognition that there is an instance in extramental reality which matches a concept in the mind of a knower. In this study, I argue that Averroes’s Instantiation Analysis fails to refute Avicenna’s real distinction by showing that Avicenna himself endorses the Instantiation Analysis and, in fact, makes use of it to motivate his real distinction. To show this, I review several texts where Avicenna makes the puzzling claim that substances are found to be in subjects. These texts reveal how Avicenna discovers the real distinction with Aristotle’s help—not, as Averroes relates, against the view of Aristotle.

Chapter 1 is dedicated to the interpretation of a recently discovered, unpublished typescript by Strauss on Averroes’s commentary on Plato’s Republic. In this transcript, available as Appendix A and composed sometime after 1956, Strauss underscores the conflict between philosophy and Islam in Averroes’s commentary on Plato’s Republic. The transcript consists only of short notes and therefore, to reveal its message, it needs to be interpreted in the context of Strauss’s other writings. Strauss’s interpretation of Averroes is based on the idea that Averroes must have been aware of the incompatibility of Islamic revelation with the best regime of Plato. Unlike other scholars, who are mainly preoccupied with Averroes’s access or lack thereof to a reliable translation of Plato’s Republic, Strauss argues that the deficiencies of Averroes’s commentary do not mean that Averroes did not have access to Plato’s Republic; he claims that such apparent deficiencies might be intentional and significant for understanding Averroes’s views.

The following contribution aims at giving a brief overview of the way in which Averroes conceives the notion of prudence (gr. φρόνησις, ar. taʿaqqul) in his Commentary on Book VI of the Nicomachean Ethics. As Averroes’ Commentary is now lost in its original Arabic version (apart from some thirty fragments preserved in the margins of the Unicum of Fez), we offer here for the first time a critical edition (from the two main Latin witnesses O et T) of the passages of Book VI of this Commentary that are dedicated to the notion of prudence. These passages are presented in their Latin version and translated into English and are the following: I. ad NE VI 5, 1140a 24-30; II. ad NE VI 7, 1141a 20-1141b 2; III. ad NE VI 7-8, 1141b 8-1142a 30; IV. ad NE VI 11-13, 1143a 25-1145a 11. Alhtough a comprehensive treatment of the notion of prudence in Averroes’ Commentary on the Ethics would require more steps (a collation of the Hebrew version of Averroes’ Commentary, including the secondary witnesses of the Latin tradition; a close comparison of the Greek version of Aristotle with the Hebrew and Latin translations of Averroes; and other passages of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and Averroes’ Commentary on the Nicomachean Ethics where the notion of prudence is mentioned), the comparison of Aristotle’s text with the corresponding passages in the Latin version of Averroes’ Commentary allows us to make two remarks: first, the almost systematic substitution of the notion of prudence (prudentia / taʿaqqul) for the notion of intellect (intellectum / ʿaql); second, whereas Aristotle defines prudence as a deliberative disposition that belongs to the (practical) realm of action, Averroes sees in it only a deliberative disposition, which is well below the notion of wisdom that he introduces, it seems, as the one and only disposition with the status of a virtue of thought. Therefore, it seems that, in regard to this point, Averroes departs from Aristotle. The Graeco-Arabic version of the Nicomachean Ethics may have partly affected this interpretation of prudence, which is subordinated to theoretical wisdom if we put aside the fact that the Arabic term taʿaqqul—which translates the Greek φρόνησις—derives from the root ʿ-q-l, which refers to reason. Studying different hermeneutical approaches by Christian philosophers and theologians - such as appropriation, interpretation and criticism - to the Arabic and Hebrew intellectual traditions during the Middle Ages, the fourteen articles contained in this volume show how these processes both challenged and shaped the Western philosophical discourse. The contributions in this volume are dedicated to cross-cultural exchanges during the Middle Ages among exponents of the Arabic, Hebrew and Latin philosophical and theological traditions. They draw particular attention to the intellectual approaches which shaped the interplays among these traditions - interplays that were characterized by the contact of various languages being used by people of different religious beliefs in their quest for knowledge: Spanish Jews writing in Arabic, Jews collaborating in the translation of Arabic texts into Latin through the vernacular, Western Muslims whose writings were read mainly by Jews and Christians in Hebrew and Latin, etc. Altogether, the eleven studies contained in this book wish to offer new insights into the rich exchanges of knowledge among communities of learning and their scholarly traditions during the Middle Ages and beyond.

El problema de la “visión escotópica”, o visión bajo condiciones de oscuridad parcial o total, es uno de los tópicos más enigmáticos y menos estudiados de la psicología aristotélica. En el artículo exponemos la exégesis de Averroes acerca de este asunto. Señalamos una dificultad que surge en el Comentario mayor en torno a algunos términos utilizados para designar la oscuridad en el conjunto de la teoría. Proponemos como solución una interpretación moderada del asunto, acorde con el “principio de economía” y la exégesis tradicional de los comentaristas. The problem of “scotopic vision”, or vision under conditions of partial or total darkness, is one of the most enigmatic and least studied topics in Aristotelian psychology. In the article we present the exegesis of Averroes on this matter. We point out a dificulty that arises in the Great Commentary around some terms used to designate the obscurity in the whole of the theory. We propose as a solution a moderate interpretation of the matter, in accordance with the “principle of economy” and the traditional exegesis of the commentators.

This monograph explores the logical systems of early logicians in the Arabic tradition from a theoretical perspective, providing a complete panorama of early Arabic logic and centering it within an expansive historical context. By thoroughly examining the writings of the first Arabic logicians, al-Fārābī, Avicenna and Averroes, the author analyzes their respective theories, discusses their relationship to the syllogistics of Aristotle and his followers, and measures their influence on later logical systems. Beginning with an introduction to the writings of the most prominent Arabic logicians, the author scrutinizes these works to determine their categorical logic, as well as their modal and hypothetical logics. Where most other studies written on this subject focus on the Arabic logicians’ epistemology, metaphysics, and theology, this volume takes a unique approach by focusing on the actual technical aspects and features of their logics. The author then moves on to examine the original texts as closely as possible and employs the symbolism of modern propositional, predicate, and modal logics, rendering the arguments of each logician clearly and precisely while clarifying the theories themselves in order to determine the differences between the Arabic logicians’ systems and those of Aristotle. By providing a detailed examination of theories that are still not very well-known in Western countries, the author is able to assess the improvements that can be found in the Arabic writings, and to situate Arabic logic within the breadth of the history of logic. This unique study will appeal mainly to historians of logic, logicians, and philosophers who seek a better understanding of the Arabic tradition. What makes language beautiful? Arabic Poetics offers an answer to what this pertinent question looked like at the height of the Islamic civilization. In this novel argument, Lara Harb suggests that literary quality depended on the ability of linguistic expression to produce an experience of discovery and wonder in the listener. Analyzing theories of how rhetorical figures, simile, metaphor, and sentence construction are able to achieve this effect of wonder, Harb shows how this aesthetic theory, first articulated at the turn of the eleventh century CE, represented a major paradigm shift from earlier Arabic criticism which based its judgement on criteria of truthfulness and naturalness. In doing so, this study poses a major challenge to the misconception in modern scholarship that Arabic criticism was 'traditionalist' or 'static', exposing an elegant widespread conceptual framework of literary beauty in the post-eleventh-century Islamicate world which is central to poetic criticism, the interpretation of Aristotle's Poetics in Arabic philosophy and the rationale underlying discussions about the inimitability of the Quran.

The names of the famous Arabic philosophers Averroes and Avicenna, alongside those of Alkindi, Alfarabi, and Algazel, appear in countless philosophical writings of the Renaissance. These authors are well-known figures of the classical period of Arabic philosophy, which stretches from the ninth to the twelfth century AD. The history of Arabic philosophy began in the middle of the ninth century, when a substantial part of ancient Greek philosophy had become available in Arabic translations: almost the complete Aristotle, numerous Greek commentaries on Aristotle, and many Platonic and Neoplatonic sources. A major centre of intellectual activity was Baghdad, the new capital of the Abbasid caliphs. It was here that Alkindi (al-Kindī, d. after AD 870), the first important philosopher of Arabic culture, and the Aristotelian philosopher Alfarabi (al-Fārābī, d. 950/1) spent the greater part of their life. A major turning point in the history of Arabic philosophy was the activity of Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, d. 1037), the court philosopher of various local rulers in Persia, who recast Aristotelian philosophy in a way that made it highly influential among Islamic theologians. The famous Baghdad theologian Algazel (al-Ghazālī, d. 1111) accepted much of Avicenna’s philosophy, but criticized it on central issues such as the eternity of the world. Averroes (Ibn Rushd, d. 1198), the Andalusian commentator on Aristotle, reacted to both Avicenna and Algazel: he censured Avicenna for deviating from Aristotle and criticized Algazel for misunderstanding the philosophical tradition.
