Averroes, stoutly influenced by Aristotle, affirmed the necessity of experience to increase all knowledge. Truth, thing's last nature, is obtained as time elapses and is only reached by accepting the predecessors's participation. Progress implies tradition and betterment: the former by impelling the development of both culture and intellect, and the latter as a result of a critical screening of diverse opinions, since it facilitates the knowledge of truth and the recognition of error. This scientific progress is reached as a consequence of effort and collaboration. Averroes sustained these ideas in his Commentary to Metaphysics II, 1, distinguishing four parts: a) Man's natural desire of truth and intellect's difficulty for reaching the most intelligible things; b) The predecessors's contribution, by their commentaries and clarifications, and the historical-progressive character of human reason; c) Philosophy, science of truth, as an investigation of complete reality; d) Truth as knowledge of cause, that is to say, the consideration of things as prove of their Author. Averroes also stated that both the Law, through Revelation, and philosophy, through reason, have the same objective, therefore it being compulsory to recur to previous contributions. |

The noetics developed by Averroes in his Comentarium Magnumin Aristotelis De Animacontains some references and arguments related to education. Our article high-lights Averroes’ use of the teacher-student relationship as an argument within the analysis of the intellect and the possible implications for a philosophy of educa-tion. To achieve this: i) we expose, as background, the problem about the one and multiple intellect in Alexander of Af-rodisia and Thesmistius; ii) we analyze the reception of this problem in some passag-es of the Comentarium Magnum of Averroes that refer to education and the use they have within the noetic argumentation of it; iii) some relevant considerations are proposed that allow reconstructing of Averroes’s philosophy of education. |

In one incomplete manuscript of Aristotle’s Metaphysics with Averroes’ Long Commentary, a scribe has inserted short prayers, which seem to fit the genre of tefillot siyyum, to be read by the reader of the text upon completion of certain chapters of Book Δ of the Metaphysics. These prayers are thematically related to the content of Aristotle’s Metaphysics and Averroes’ commentary and accordingly suggest a philosophical interpretation of Judaism, God and the creation of the world that has as its centre-point metaphysics, as understood by Aristotle and his most important commentator, Averroes. |

During the Middle Ages Aristotle’s treatises were accessible to intellectuals via translations and commentaries. Among his works on natural philosophy, the zoological books received relatively little scholarly attention, though several medieval commentators carefully studied Aristotle’s investigations of the animal kingdom. Averroes completed in 1169 a commentary on an Arabic translation of Aristotle’s Parts of Animals and Generation of Animals. In 1323 Gersonides completed his supercommentary on a Hebrew translation of Averroes’ commentary. This article examines how these two medieval commentators interpret the first book of Aristotle’s Parts of Animals, at the center of which stand methodological questions regarding the study of animals. Aristotle’s discussion of classification is presented by Averroes and Gersonides in light of an epistemological debate concerning the requisite method for scientific inquiries and discoveries. Sense perception is contrasted with rational reasoning, and ultimately a combined method is proposed, sense perception maintaining supremacy. These commentators outline a clear link between the systematic arrangement of animal species as offered by Aristotle, and his subsequent logical demonstrations which, according to them, form the core of biological investigations. |
