| Cet ouvrage propose une interprétation non classique de la tradition scientifique arabe dont le statut a toujours posé un problème aux historiens des sciences. Tout ouvrage qui se veut être véritablement historique ne peut en effet se permettre de l'ignorer et pourtant les pages qui lui sont consacrées sont presque négligeables par rapport à la tradition qui la précède comme à celle qui lui succède. Et la conclusion à laquelle ils aboutissent c'est que son mérite est de préserver et de transmettre l'héritage grec aux européens, sans jamais se demander ce que signifie préserver ni transmettre. Ce traitement expéditif fait de la tradition arabe un accident de l'histoire, au mieux une annexe de la tradition grecque évacuant ainsi l'une des questions fondamentales dont s'occupe l'historien, à savoir son timing: pourquoi faudrait-il attendre jusqu'au IXe siècle pour voir la science et la rationalité rayonner dans le monde ? Et il faudrait attendre la découverte des résultats révolutionnaires en astronomie, à partir de la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle, pour remettre profondément en cause cette attitude généralement adoptée à l'égard de la tradition arabe. Le résultat des recherches de ces dernières années contraste avec ce que nous ont toujours dit les historiens modernes: la tradition arabe s'est constituée en rupture avec la tradition grecque; ce qui explique l'élan qu'a pris la science et sa rapide diffusion de l'orient à l'occident, une globalisation sans précédent du savoir qui a fait de l'arabe la première langue internationale dans l'histoire et assuré son développement presque ininterrompu depuis le IXe siècle. Le lecteur trouvera dans cet ouvrage quelques travaux qui ont permis de conduire à ce résultat, une interprétation non classique e la tradition scientifi que arabe qui remet en cause la périodisation classique en histoire des sciences. Signalons qu'on est encore à cheval entre les deux interprétations, classique et non classique, ce qui explique la variété des études et la diversité des analyses de leurs auteurs. |

| Loin d’être simplement écarté par principe, loin même d’être un thème marginal ou une difficulté à éviter, le vide est tout au long du Moyen Âge l’objet de nombreuses analyses. Les contributions rassemblées dans cet ouvrage examinent quelques-uns des principaux développements qui prennent le vide comme objet ou comme moyen, dans le monde arabe comme dans le monde médiéval latin. Ils traitent du vide en dehors du monde comme du vide à l’intérieur du monde, des différentes définitions du vide, de son rapport au lieu ou bien au mouvement. Ils concernent la physique ou la cosmologie, mais aussi la biologie. Nous avons souhaité dédier ces études à Edward Grant qui, le premier, a mis en lumière l’étendue des problèmes scientifiques traités par les Médiévaux à l’aide du concept de vide. |

| Im Jahr 2007 konnte das Raimundus-Lullus-Institut der Universität Freiburg sein 50-jähriges Bestehen feiern. Aus diesem Anlass fand vom 25.–28. November 2007 ein internationaler wissenschaftlicher Kongress unter dem Titel Gottes Schau und Weltbetrachtung. Interpretationen zum »Liber contemplationis« des Raimundus Lullus statt. Die 20 Referentinnen und Referenten wurden bewusst nicht nur aus dem Kreis namhafter Lull-Spezialisten gewählt, sondern repräsentieren ein breites Spektrum internationaler mediävistischer Forschung. Mit ihren Tagungsbeiträgen, die in diesem Band gesammelt vorliegen, bieten sie eine informative Tour d’Horizon durch Ramon Lulls umfangreichstes und wohl bedeutendstes Werk, den Liber contemplationis in Deum (katalanisch: Llibre de contemplació en Déu). Der Liber contemplationis umfasst 366 Kapitel: ein Kapitel für jeden Tag des Jahres und eines für den zusätzlichen Tag im Schaltjahr. Der Inhalt des Werkes ist oft als ‚enzyklopädisch‘ bezeichnet worden. Sein Ziel besteht jedoch nicht in einer umfassenden Darstellung des Wissens über die gesamte Wirklichkeit, sondern in der Bestimmung und Beschreibung der Wirklichkeit in Bezug auf die Betrachtung Gottes, die Erkenntnis der Glaubensartikel sowie die Erlangung eines tugendhaften, gottgefälligen Lebens. Der vorliegende Band umfasst neben einführenden Untersuchungen zur lateinischen Textüberlieferung und zur Struktur des Werkes sowohl detaillierte Kommentare zu ausgewählten Kapiteln als auch Diskussionen von Einzelfragen vor dem Hintergrund von Lulls Gesamtwerk in seinem historischen Kontext. To mark this occasion, an international congress was held on 25–28 November 2007, titled Vision of God and Contemplation of the World. Interpretations of Ramon Lull’s »Liber contemplationis«. The congress papers assembled in the present volume offer an informative survey of the Liber contemplationis in Deum (Catalan: Llibre de contemplació en Déu), the most comprehensive and probably most significant work of Lull’s. The Liber contemplationis comprises 366 chapters: one chapter for each day of the year, including one for the additional day of the leap year. The contents of the work have often been described as ‘encyclopaedic’. Its aim, however, is not to offer a comprehensive account of all that is known about reality, but rather to recognise and describe reality in the context of contemplating God, knowing the articles of faith as well as attaining a virtuous life agreeable to God. The volume contains introductory studies of the Latin tradition of the text as well as detailed commentaries on individual chapters. |

| Depuis la séparation entre médecine et philosophie traditionnellement attribuée à Hippocrate, les relations entre ces disciplines ont toujours été intenses et parfois conflictuelles. C’est une histoire de ces rapports que proposent les quinze études réunies dans cet ouvrage, en se centrant sur quelques figures ou moments déterminants: Platon, Aristote, Galien, les écoles empirique et méthodiste, al-Rāzī, Averroès, le XVIe siècle italien, Locke, Kant, Cabanis, les philosophes-médecins de la IIIe République, Canguilhem ou encore Jaspers. Si aujourd’hui la demande adressée à la philosophie par les médecins concerne principalement l’éthique, le dialogue entre les deux disciplines a porté historiquement d’abord sur le statut épistémologique de la médecine : le meilleur médecin est-il nécessairement philosophe ? Que peut apprendre la philosophie de la méthode du médecin ? La médecine est-elle un art du cas singulier, une science ou les deux ? En s’inscrivant dans le temps long, ces études rappellent que l’institutionnalisation actuelle de la philosophie de la médecine s’accompagne parfois d’un oubli des origines historiques de la réflexion sur la médecine. Le contact avec la médecine conduisant aussi la philosophie à se souvenir qu’elle se définit comme un genre de vie, c’est la question de l’amélioration du bien-être et de la santé des hommes qui se pose alors, dans un environnement que l’introduction de techniques thérapeutiques nouvelles modifie en permanence. |

| English summary: The relationship between physics and metaphysics is one of the core questions at the heart of Aristotelian philosophy. The collected studies in this volume explore the epistemological connections between these two sciences, and especially certain essential points raised in Greek and Arabic history concerning this debate. French description: La question de savoir quel type de rapport entretiennent la physique et la metaphysique est au coeur du systeme philosophique d'Aristote. Ce rapport, toutefois, n'est pas facile a saisir, non seulement parce qu'Aristote ne l'a jamais defini de facon claire, mais parce qu'il est delicat d'en comprendre la nature a la lumiere de la theorie de la science exposee dans les Seconds Analytiques. En effet, Aristote affirme d'une part que la metaphysique, concue comme science universelle, n'a pas de genre-sujet propre, et d'autre part que la physique, quoique seconde par rapport a la metaphysique, en assure le fondement. C'est de ce rapport ambivalent que decoule le plus grand nombre d'apories liees au statut epistemologique de chacune des deux sciences comme a la nature de leur rapport. Les contributions reunies dans ce recueil s'inscrivent dans ce contexte theorique complexe. Elles portent moins sur la difficulte de comprendre le critere ou les criteres d'organisation des traites qu'on appelle Metaphysique et Physique que sur celle de presenter et de justifier l'entrelacement epistemologique de ces deux sciences, concues comme deux disciplines unitaires mais plurielles. Sans pretendre reconstruire l'histoire de la question, l'un des enjeux de ce volume fut aussi de degager, passe le texte meme d'Aristote, certains points nodaux de l'histoire grecque et arabe du debat. |

| Georges Vajda (1908-1981) fut un éminent spécialiste des études juives et arabes du Moyen Age. Son oeuvre publiée est importante et reconnue, mais des études restaient encore dans l'ombre. Le présent recueil rassemble vingt-six essais sur l'histoire intellectuelle juive et arabe au Moyen Age, publiées tout au long de sa carrière dans des revues d'accès souvent difficile. Etudes parfois pionnières, elles ont représenté le point de départ de ses recherches sur des auteurs ou des ouvrages qu'il a contribué à introduire dans l'histoire de la pensée médiévale, et sur lesquels il reviendra pendant toute sa vie. C'est le cas de l'article sur le Livre des croyances et des opinions de Saadia Gaon et de celui sur son commentaire sur le Livre de la Création dont les pénétrantes hypothèses ont contribué à renouveler l'intérêt concernant cet auteur. Il en est ainsi de deux autres études, l'une sur Qirqisani et l'autre sur al-Muqammis qui ont ouvert la piste d'une analyse renouvelée de l'histoire religieuse du judaïsme aux IXe et Xe siècles, chantier sur lequel Vajda n'a jamais cessé de travailler. Cet ouvrage s'adresse aux philosophes, historiens et linguistes qui s'intéressent aux fondements de l'histoire de la philosophie médiévale, nourrie par les pensées chrétienne, musulmane et juive. Les études ici réunies représentent également un jalon dans l'histoire de l'orientalisme des XIXe et XXe siècles. Aux chercheurs et au grand public cultivé est ainsi offert un recueil qui procure accès à des recherches poursuivies par Vajda pendant plus d'un demi-siècle. |

| In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle suggests that a moral principle ‘does not immediately appear to the man who has been corrupted by pleasure or pain’. Phantasia in Aristotle’s Ethics investigates his claim and its reception in ancient and medieval Aristotelian traditions, including Arabic, Greek, Hebrew and Latin. While contemporary commentators on the Ethics have overlooked Aristotle’s remark, his ancient and medieval interpreters made substantial contributions towards a clarification of the claim’s meaning and relevance. Even when the hazards of transmission have left no explicit comments on this particular passage, as is the case in the Arabic tradition, medieval responders still offer valuable interpretations of phantasia (appearance) and its role in ethical deliberation and action. This volume casts light on these readings, showing how the distant voices from the medieval Arabic, Greek, Hebrew and Latin Aristotelian traditions still contribute to contemporary debate concerning phantasia, motivation and deliberation in Aristotle’s Ethics. |

| Many of the leading philosophers in the Islamic world were doctors, yielding extensive links between philosophy and medicine. The twelve papers in this volume explore these links, focusing on the classical or formative period (up to the eleventh century AD). One central theme is the Arabic reception of the two outstanding figures of Greek medicine, Hippocrates and Galen ? we learn how Hippocrates was made into a mouthpiece for ethical wisdom, and how Galen influenced ideas in ethics and the nature of plant life. Aristotle is also considered, with a study of the reception of his ideas on longevity. Several of the luminaries of philosophy in the early Islamic world are also studied, including Abu Bakr al-Razi, al-Farabi, and Avicenna: all of them deploy medical ideas in their philosophical writings, whether to treat emotional distress as a kind of illness, to explain the function of eyesight, to compare the well-functioning state to the healthy human body, or to draw on anatomical ideas in works on psychology. Conversely, the volume also includes research on the use of philosophical ideas in medical texts, including medical compendia and the works of 'Ali ibn Ridwan. Attention is also given to the connections between medicine and Islamic theology (kalam). As a whole, the book provides both a survey of the kinds of work being done in this relatively unexplored area, and a springboard for further research. |

| Muhammad founded a World-State as well as a faith; as Islam spread from its first centres, Muslim political thinkers had to apply the divinely revealed law of the Prophet to new circumstances. They had to relate new realities of power and authority to the ideal constitution which he had laid down and which his immediate successors had elaborated. Against this background Dr Rosenthal discusses the later Muslim philosophers who were influenced by the political thought of Plato and Aristotle. He shows how Greek thought modified the Islamic and yet was always subordinated to Muslim categories of thought and political needs. Dr Rosenthal thus surveys the chief traditions of Islamic political thought from the eighth to the end of the fifteenth centuries. He emphasises the basic unity given by the shared faith of the writers, without diminishing the individuality of each. Orientalists will welcome the book; so will historians of the medieval West, for it shows them the religious, political and intellectual positions underlying the expansion of Islam. |

They had to relate new realities of power and authority to the ideal constitution which he had laid down and which his immediate successors had elaborated. Against this background Dr Rosenthal discusses the later Muslim philosophers who were influenced by the political thought of Plato and Aristotle. He shows how Greek thought modified the Islamic and yet was always subordinated to Muslim categories of thought and political needs. Dr Rosenthal thus surveys the chief traditions of Islamic political thought from the eighth to the end of the fifteenth centuries. He emphasises the basic unity given by the shared faith of the writers, without diminishing the individuality of each.
