Miscellany

Physical Description
  • Material: Mixed
  • Pages: 227 + I leaves
  • Leaves Format: not available
  • Dimensions: 210 x 145 mm

Detailed Description
  • Foliation:
The manual foliation (I - CCIX) on ff. 5r- 219r dated to the 15th century is not trustworthy, because of foliation mistakes in switching numbers (see on ff. 19r and 20r ) or in omission of counting (see ff. 99r and 100r ). These mistakes seem to be due to a collation mistake.
The DARE-counting tries to represent the correct foliation and goes with the counting of folios used by the catalogue.
  • Collation:
    (VII+3)^17 + 10 VI^137 + V^147 + 6 VI^219 + IV^227.
Permutation of leafs in the second and third layer. The correct order (established around 1500 in the margins) is: 18.20.19.21-26.28.27.29 for ff. 18r- 29v and 33.35.34.37.36.38. for ff. 33r- 38v .
The layers have signatures (two rows: ff. 18r- 147v and 148r- 219v ).
In between the layers there is a fold out of parchment, containing certificates (before f. 178r out of an officialate document from Cologne, dated: 06 October 1431 ) and parts of a manuscript from the 14th century . The back side of the old binding is from the same manuscript and now "Hss-Fragm. F 6". Together with Fragment 1, it was the outer double page of a quaternion.
  • Condition Description:
According to the table of contents (ff. 2v- 3r ), the codex first (probably before 1450 ) consisted of the following parts: (1) Leaf 2-4.12.13.16 (12rv.13rv.16rv then still empty); (2) A layer a, which is now located in GB 4° 171 (leaf 49-61); (3) leaf 18-147 (139v-147v then still empty). Later, the librarian Conradus took the aforementioned layer (cf. f. 2v : "Nota: primus sexternus est alibi positus ..."), expanded the codex to leaf 219 (219rv remained empty, at first) and adjusted the table of contents (the part refering to layer a was pasted over with a paper strip and labelled with the details for ff. 5r- 18r ). Even later ( 1460? ), leaf 219 was written on and leafs 220-227 were added.
Hss-Fragm. F 6, originally from this codex, now is a separate document.
    F. 1r and the folios after f. 225r are missing in this scan; according to Vennebusch , the former contains a signature.
On ff. 228r- 228v (not part of this scan) we have an old end leaf out of parchment, containing parts of a certificate. The text is scraped.
The counting of the digitization seems to omit numbers as one can see between ff. 34r and 35r .
There seem to be fotos missing on the microfilm labelled "XXIII". The missing fotos might show ff. 26v- 27r .
  • Decoration:
We have watermarks on ff. 18r- 147v (among others: hand Briquet 11254, 1422 - 1449) , and key Piccard III 407+414; 1440 / 1445 ) and 148r- 219v (among others: fruit Piccard I 546/547; 1453 , 1454 ). Rubricated, except for ff. 219r- 224v , many Lombards were decorated. Red-violet Fleuronnée initial on f. 148r . The De Substantia Orbis fragment is rubricated and has a red, decorated initial covering three lines in height.
  • Layout:

24-38 lines to the page. The De Substantia Orbis (Fragment 1) has 30 lines to the page.

    Ff. 1v , 218v and 225r- 227v are without script.
  • Hand Description:
Text is written by multiple hands in gothic cursiva. The De Substantia Orbis (Fragment 1) is written in textualis.
    Ff. 18r- 139r were written 1440 / 1445 .
Ff. 148r- 218r were written around 1455 by the Kölner Kreuzbruder Rodolphus de Gravia.
    Ff. 2v- 4v , 13v- 17v and 139r- 147v were written by the librarian Conradus de Grunenberg .
  • Binding Description:
The codex is bound in leather (1964). Additionally, we have leather binding on both covers from an earlier binding (15th century), including stamps of the workshop of the Kölner Kreuzherren. Two clasps.
  • Provenance:
Both covers with stamps from the workshop of the Kölner Kreuzherren.
On f. 2v we have a note of ownership of the Kölner Kreuzherren from the 15th century : "Liber .C. et pertinet fratribus sancte Crucis in Colonia. Et habentur in eo sermones et omelie de sanctis neglecte". According to Vennebusch , "liber .C." refers to the third volume of a multi-volumed homiliary: liber .A. = GB 4° 99 and liber .B. = GB 4° 20.
On f. 1r we have a signature O IX. In the 17th century , Pedro de Alva y Astorga used the manuscript (ff. 70v- 77v ) and gives the signature num. 1.in 4.
