    On f. 2r (under ספר המבוא) at the head of work, appear a short poem: / קול חפשי בינה ככסף / איזה מצרף מסיג שלי / חכמת דבר תשיב אומר / כור לבין ניתן לי בו הגו סיגים מכסף / ויצא לצורף כלי
    The translator's preface on the legitimacy of the study of Greek logic begins: "מצרף לכסף התבונה וכור לזהב האמונה. לחכמת הדבר היא למנה. כי בו יבחן כל מאמר". Farther on: "וכבר הזהירו רז"ל על זה ואמרו הוי שקול (שקוד) ללמוד תורה ודע מה שתשיב את האפיקורוס ולא על האפיקורוס בלבד היתה כוונתם ואזהרתם כי אם על החלוקים על האמת. וידוע שאין כח באדם ממנו לעמוד כנגד הפקחים משאר האומות החלוקים עלינו אם לא ילמד החכמה הזאת. ומפני שראיתי כי רבו ההוללים הרעים המתפארים עלינו בדרך המחלוקת והניצוח קנאתי בהם אני יעקב בר' אנטולייו ונתעורר תשוקתי להעתיק החכמה הזאת כפי אשר תשיג ידי. ואמת כי נתתי אל לבי להקל מעלי תחילה עבודת ספרי החכמהמ התכונה הכבדה בהעתקתם ולימודה... אכן הציקתני רוח אחי ורעי החכמים והמשכלים אשר בעיר נרבונה ובדרוש אשר מלאם לבם לקרבה אל המלאכה הזאת ולאהבם הטה שכמי לשאת משא על משאי. ובעוז הנותן ליעף כח אזרע בבקר בחכמת התכונה לערב בחכמת ההגיון תהיינה ידי אמונה". He then explains that the Talmudic prohibition "מנעו בניכם מן ההגיון" (TB, Berakhoth, f. 28b) does not apply to the grown-up persons; for it only says מנעו בניכם, and not מנעו עצמיכם.
