| The notion of ὑπόκρισις (hypokrisis) was employed for the first time with the meaning of “rhetorical delivery” in Aristotle’s Rhetoric, where it is the target of a short and highly critical analysis. A practice borrowed directly from the theatre, and apparently resistant to any form of technicisation that might give it a legitimate place alongside the other means of rhetorical persuasion, ὑπόκρισις (hypokrisis) was nevertheless extremely effective–as Aristotle acknowledged with undisguised irritation. In the face of Aristotle’s ambivalence, and torn between a purist and idealist conception of rhetoric on the one hand, and the contemporary reality of speech, which required him to recognise a practice of which he could not approve, on the other, what was Averroes’ attitude in his Middle Commentary on the Rhetoric? Dependent on the Arabic version of the Rhetoric where the term ὑπόκρισις (hypokrisis) was – with one exception – translated by the expression أخذ بالوجوه (aḫḏ bi-l-wuǧūh) – “the taking of faces” –, has Averroes followed Aristotle in his hesitations and reticences? Or has he instead chosen to legitimise the use of hypokrisis in rhetorical technique? The analysis of the Rushdian interpretation of the ‘taking of faces’ will allow a better understanding of Averroes’ exegetical method, and grasp of what it meant, to him, to be faithful to the First Master. |

L\u2019interpr\u00e9tation de l\u2019action oratoire par Averro\u00e8s dans le Commentaire moyen \u00e0 la Rh\u00e9torique d\u2019Aristote"},"abstract":"The notion of \u1f51\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 (hypokrisis) was employed for the first time with the meaning of \u201crhetorical delivery\u201d in Aristotle\u2019s Rhetoric, where it is the target of a short and highly critical analysis. A practice borrowed directly from the theatre, and apparently resistant to any form of technicisation that might give it a legitimate place alongside the other means of rhetorical persuasion, \u1f51\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 (hypokrisis) was nevertheless extremely effective\u2013as Aristotle acknowledged with undisguised irritation. In the face of Aristotle\u2019s ambivalence, and torn between a purist and idealist conception of rhetoric on the one hand, and the contemporary reality of speech, which required him to recognise a practice of which he could not approve, on the other, what was Averroes\u2019 attitude in his Middle Commentary on the Rhetoric? Dependent on the Arabic version of the Rhetoric where the term \u1f51\u03c0\u03cc\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2 (hypokrisis) was \u2013 with one exception \u2013 translated by the expression \u0623\u062e\u0630 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0648\u062c\u0648\u0647 (a\u1e2b\u1e0f bi-l-wu\u01e7\u016bh) \u2013 \u201cthe taking of faces\u201d \u2013, has Averroes followed Aristotle in his hesitations and reticences? Or has he instead chosen to legitimise the use of hypokrisis in rhetorical technique? | The relationship between the material intellect and the active intellect from Averroes’ perspective is an important and yet complicated part of his philosophy. His views on these issues are ambiguous since they are derived from the Aristotle’s theories which seem obscure in this regard. The aim of the present study is to discover Averroes’ final theory on the relationship between the material intellect and the active intellect and their connection to human soul. Reviewing various theories of Averroes on this issue, this study shows that despite ambiguity in his explanations, his final theory is that he believes these two intellects exist apart from human soul. Considering the relationship between the material intellect and the active intellect, he believes that in some aspects both of them are the same, yet they are different in some other aspects that is, regarding their acts, they are different because the active intellect acts as a creator of forms while the material intellect is just a receiver of the forms. | In this article the authors reveal the discovery of a fragment of an otherwise lost text by Averroes, that was made possible in the context of the European project Philosophy in Context: Arabic and Syriac Manuscripts in the Mediterranean (PhiC). The passage at stake which is an excerpt of the third book ov Averroes Great Commentary on De Caelo, includes also a virulent critique of Avicenna. The third book did not reach us in Arabic but only in a Latin version. The fragment is larger than its Latin counterpart. It has been copied around 1542 and was appended to Hojazade's Tahāfut al-falāsifa to which it is related. |

| The present discussion derives from a larger research project that concerns the medieval Latin translation of Averroes’ Middle Commentary on the Nicomachean Ethics. The translation was carried out by Hermann the German in Toledo in 1240. I am concerned here specifically with nine passages that are distributed over three chapters of the Commentary (II.7; IV.1-3) in which the Latin translation is sprinkled with transliterations based on Greek and Arabic terms. These transliterations, which are not glosses, can be understood on several levels, and these, in turn, raise questions about the boundary between transliteration proper and translation that borrows from the source language a term which is then integrated into the Latin lexicon in the form of a calque or ‘loan translation’. Examining these transliterations makes it possible, first, to show that the translator does not follow a uniform method throughout the text, which could imply the existence of several translators or several collaborators with distinct and exclusive areas of expertise, and second, to advance the hypothesis that a Greek copy of the Nicomachean Ethics was available at the time the translation was being executed in 1240. Finally, the discussion of transliterations makes it possible to confirm certain emendations proposed by Ullman in the Arabic edition of the Nicomachean Ethics published by Akasoy and Fidora, as well as to suggest a primary classification of the surviving manuscripts of the Latin version of the Middle Commentary on the Nicomachean Ethics. |

| L’analogia dell’essere attribuita ad Aristotele costituisce un tema filosofico tra i più discussi, sul quale è tornata recentemente a concentrarsi l’attenzione degli studiosi. Comprendendo un arco temporale che va dall’antichità all’età contemporanea, il tema permette di essere trattato da molteplici prospettive, aprendo il campo alla collaborazione fra esperti di epoche e discipline diverse. Il volume contiene i testi più significativi relativamente alla nascita e allo sviluppo della dottrina dell’analogia dell’essere. I passi sono riportati a fronte con traduzioni originali annotate e sono raccolti in due sezioni: quella di filosofia antica e tardoantica e quella di filosofia medievale araba e latina. La prima sezione comprende i principali testi aristotelici che della dottrina dell’analogia dell’essere hanno costituito l’origine, e i passi fra i più rilevanti della tradizione commentaristica antica e tardoantica, da Alessandro di Afrodisia (II-III sec. d.C) a Simplicio di Cilicia (VI sec. d.C.), nei quali è possibile individuare le prime fasi dello sviluppo di tale dottrina. La sezione di filosofia medievale araba e latina comprende passi scelti dei filosofi che rappresentano le tappe essenziali dello sviluppo della dottrina dell’analogia dell’essere nel medioevo arabo e latino, da al-Fārābī (m. 950 c.) a Tommaso d’Aquino (XIII sec.) a Tommaso de Vio, il “Gaetano” (XV-XVI sec.). Oltre a fornire un utile strumento per la ricostruzione delle origini dell’attribuzione dell’analogia dell’essere ad Aristotele, il volume individua nei testi riportati l’imprescindibile base per ulteriori sviluppi di tale dottrina nella metafisica contemporanea. |

| Averroè (1126 – 1198), filosofo, medico, matematico e giurisperito arabo, rappresenta una figura complessa e assai importante per lo sviluppo del pensiero. In quest'opera lo vediamo difendere la filosofia aristotelica dalle critiche mosse da al-Ghazali nel suo L'incoerenza della filosofia, dimostrando come le accuse di al-Ghazali fossero infondate e come l'interpretazione di Avicenna avesse distorto le basi del pensiero aristotelico. | This article examines Ibn Bāǧǧa’s (Avempace) interpretation of the first two chapters of the eighth book of Aristotle’s Physics and what he has in mind when he describes Aristotle’s proof as a demonstration of the eternity of motion “in genus.” His approach in the second appendix to book eight differs from the one he develops in the main commentary. In the former text, Ibn Bāǧǧa works on the distinction between essential and accidental successions, which leads him to realize that the accidental and thus possible successions— horizontal approach—are not sufficient to guarantee the eternity of movement and then to adopt a vertical approach that goes back to the numerical identity of the circular continuous motion. We show to what extent Ibn Bāǧǧa’s interpretation is indebted to Al-Fārābī’s lost treatise On Changing Beings and also aim to highlight the role of this reading in the evolution of Averroes’ interpretation. |
