| The twelve essays in this volume are the result of a research programme by a Danish-Swedish research network into The Aristotelian Tradition: The reception of Aristotle’s works on logic and metaphysics in the Middle Ages. This impressive and wide-ranging volume, which has its roots in the disciplines of both philology and philosophy, has at its core a focus on the different historical manifestations of Aristotelian thought on logical and metaphysical matters. | A l'occasion de ses 65 ans, plusieurs de ses amis, collègues et étudiants ont voulu jeter un regard à la fois rétrospectif et prospectif sur l'oeuvre et la carrière de Joël Biard. Du CNRS (Centre d'histoire des sciences et des philosophies arabes et médiévales) à l'Université de Tours-François Rabelais (Centre d'études supérieures de la Renaissance), il n'a cessé de travailler à faire mieux connaître une période négligée de l'histoire de la philosophie, le Moyen Age. Auteur d'une oeuvre ample et exigeante, qui fait désormais autorité dans plusieurs domaines, il a permis de réévaluer l'importance du Moyen Age tardif dans les bouleversements intellectuels qui agitent l'Europe entre le XIVe et le XVIe siècles. Il a ainsi profondément renouvelé notre connaissance de l'histoire des sciences et de la philosophie de cette période. A partir de ces acquis, les études ici réunies entendent montrer le dynamisme des champs d'enquête (logique et philosophie naturelle, études buridaniennes, Renaissance) qu'il a marqués de son empreinte, et mettre au travail une oeuvre dont la fécondité n'est plus à démontrer. |

| The notion of “per se” (καθ’ αὑτό) is one of the key elements of Aristotle’s ontology and epistemology. Nowhere, however, does Aristotle provide a systematic study of it, leaving the articulation of its different meanings and the significance of the general project in which this notion is inscribed unclear. This paper aims to study the interpretation that Averroes provides of this notion in his Long Commentary on the Posterior Analytics. In translating for the first time some long quotations of this commentary into a modern language, we will show the central role that this notion plays in Averroes’ scientific theory and in particular in his theory of demonstration of sign. |

| The study of Islamic philosophy has recently entered a new and exciting phase. Both the received canon of Islamic philosophers and the grand narrative of the course of Islamic philosophy are in the process of being radically questioned and revised. The bulk of twentieth-century Western scholarship on Arabic or Islamic philosophy focused on the period from the ninth century to the twelfth. It is a measure of the transformation that is currently underway in the field that the present Handbook gives roughly equal weight to every century from the ninth to the twentieth. The Handbook differs from previous overviews in another significant way: It is work-centered rather than person- or theme-centered. This format is intended to give readers a better sense of what a work in Islamic philosophy looks like, and of the issues, concepts, and arguments that are at play in works belonging to various periods and subfields within Islamic philosophy. |

| The theme of the pleasure of knowledge is central in Averroes’ aesthetical reflection of Aristotle’s Poetics, regardless whether we side with the logical or with the moral interpretation. The first one stresses the continuity between Averroes and previous commentators in his attempt to reconstruct the Poetics as an integral part of the Logic itself, whereby poetic discourse is conceived as a form of reasoning based on syllogisms. According to the latter perspective, however, pleasure is central in that poetry is a tool towards the pursuit of happiness: in this perspective it is necessary to bear in mind some common themes present in other works by Averroes (particularly in the commentaries on the Aristotelian Organon – and especially the commentary on the Rhetoric –, in the commentaries on Plato’s Republic, and, last but not least, in the Decisive Treatise). The pleasure of contemplative knowledge must go hand in hand with the pursuit of communal happiness and therefore with the good and proper order of community and society. Poetry represents a central tool towards this aim in that it expresses moral truths which cannot not be communicated (to everybody) by means of logic and philosophy alone. |

| William of Luna, master at the studium of Naples during the reign of the Hohenstaufens, is considered to be the author, among other translations from Arabic, of the Latin version of Averroes' Middle Commentary on the Isagoge. The Arabic text of this commentary is lost, but the translation into Hebrew, made by Jacob Anatoli, seems to reflect faithfully the syntax and word order of the original text. Now, many single terms or expressions in Anatoli's translation correspond to two terms or expressions, rather than one in the various witnesses of William of Luna's version. Are these double equivalences due to William himself, who would have then provided, here and there, more than one translation? For at least five of the eighteen cases analyzed in the present article, the question seems particularly appropriate. |

| The notion of “per se” (καθ’ αὑτό) is one of the key elements of Aristotle’s ontology and epistemology. Nowhere, however, does Aristotle provide a systematic study of it, leaving the articulation of its different meanings and the significance of the general project in which this notion is inscribed unclear. This paper aims to study the interpretation that Averroes provides of this notion in his Long Commentary on the Posterior Analytics. In translating for the first time some long quotations of this commentary into a modern language, we will show the central role that this notion plays in Averroes’ scientific theory and in particular in his theory of demonstration of sign. |
