Title | Ibn Rushd’s Political Philosophy in Contemporary Arab Scholarship: A Transient Revival |

What is it about Ibn Rushd that has made him such a lodestar for two different generations of Arab intellectuals–one which emerged in the early 1900s, the other in the late 1970s? Focusing on the second group, which arose in the milieu of young intellectuals who had been shaped by the secular pan-Arab nationalist and socialist ideologies of the 1950s and 1960s, but who now confronted the bankruptcy of those ideologies in the face of an insurgent populist Islamism, the following review identifies two currents in contemporary Arabic Rushdian scholarship: cultural nationalism and modernizing universalism. After analyzing how each sought inspiration in Ibn Rushd for its vision of Arab renewal, and then showing how deepening exposure to Ibn Rushd's texts revealed the incommensurability of his political philosophy with their nationalist, secularist or egalitarian agendas, I suggest that this "Second Wave" of Rushdian enthusiasm is already beginning to ebb. As pressure for democratization intensifies, the consolidation of democratic norms is narrowing the options for Arab intellectuals to a choice between a comprehensive liberalism and a religious populism neither of which seems to have any use for Ibn Rushd's political philosophy. While some individuals are opting for the latter choice, it appears that the majority of both currents are converging around a comprehensively liberal consensus. In such a context, can Ibn Rushd with his insistence on differentiating between high and low still provide, if not an alternative, at least a corrective to the prevailing spirit of the age? |

Title | The concept of ‘nature’ in Aristotle, Avicenna and Averroes |

This study is concerned with 'nature' specifically as the subject-matter of physics, or natural science, as described by Aristotle in his "Physics". It also discusses the definitions of nature, and more specifically physical nature, provided by Avicenna (d. 1037) and Averroes (d. 1198) in their commentaries on Aristotle's "Physics". Avicenna and Averroes share Aristotle's conception of nature as a principle of motion and rest. While according to Aristotle the subject matter of physics appears to be nature, or what exists by nature, Avicenna believes that it is the natural body, and Averroes holds that the subject matter of physics or natural science consists in the natural things, in what constitutes a slight shift in focus. |

This article examines Ibn Bāǧǧa’s (Avempace) interpretation of the first two chapters of the eighth book of Aristotle’s Physics and what he has in mind when he describes Aristotle’s proof as a demonstration of the eternity of motion “in genus.” His approach in the second appendix to book eight differs from the one he develops in the main commentary. In the former text, Ibn Bāǧǧa works on the distinction between essential and accidental successions, which leads him to realize that the accidental and thus possible successions— horizontal approach—are not sufficient to guarantee the eternity of movement and then to adopt a vertical approach that goes back to the numerical identity of the circular continuous motion. We show to what extent Ibn Bāǧǧa’s interpretation is indebted to Al-Fārābī’s lost treatise On Changing Beings and also aim to highlight the role of this reading in the evolution of Averroes’ interpretation. |

Title | Averroè e Giordano Bruno sulla religione: metamorfosi della credenza |

Although personally he had been a practicing Muslim, in the Western philosophical tradition Averroes has always had a reputation for being an unbeliever. Some aspects of Averroes’ thought, including the doctrine of the so-called ‘double truth’ and his noetic, could justify such a misinterpretation. Also Giordano Bruno can be labeled as an ‘averroistic’ unbeliever, but only because he viewed the historical religions as nomoi, ‘fake’ laws with the purpose of ruling the masses. The metamorphosis of Averroes from belief to disbelief, even through Bruno, has prepared the ground for the libertine tradition of the seventeenth and later centuries. |

Averroes (Ibn Rushd) is well-known for his controversial thesis that there is only one separate intellect for all humankind. This article provides a detailed analysis of Averroes’s Unity Argument from his Long Commentary on De Anima, which argues from unified intelligible concepts to a single transcendent intellect. I set out the Unity Argument in its textual and philosophical context, explain exactly how the argument works on a new interpretation of its infinite regress (based on Averroes’s other assumptions about the mind-dependence of universals), and offer some brief suggestions as to how it might be further evaluated in light of alternative ancient and medieval theories. Ultimately, I demonstrate that the Unity Argument is Averroes’s most important philosophical argument for his distinctive view of intellect. |

[-9223372036854775808]}
Title | Prophecy Between Poetics and Politics from Al-Farabi to Leo Strauss |

Judaeo-Arabic prophetology, as developed in the wake of Platonic and Aristotelian philosophy, was highly attentive to the kind of representational modes produced by divine revelation and their political use—but also their political precarity. By drawing on another corpus, less often discussed in this context, the Arabic commentaries on Aristotle's Poetics and Rhetoric, this study proposes to undertake a close analysis of how the medieval thinkers in question (Al-Farabi, Avicenna, Averroes, and Maimonides) understood the poetics of prophecy to function. What emerges is an account of how the political theo-logic of poetics and rhetoric—as developed with respect to terms such as imitation, imagination and visualization—came to play a central role in the theory of prophecy, and how that theory of prophecy in turn gave rise to an understanding of what Leo Strauss once termed the ‘literary character’ of these philosophers' ‘art of writing’. |
