| In this article the authors reveal the discovery of a fragment of an otherwise lost text by Averroes, that was made possible in the context of the European project Philosophy in Context: Arabic and Syriac Manuscripts in the Mediterranean (PhiC). The passage at stake which is an excerpt of the third book ov Averroes Great Commentary on De Caelo, includes also a virulent critique of Avicenna. The third book did not reach us in Arabic but only in a Latin version. The fragment is larger than its Latin counterpart. It has been copied around 1542 and was appended to Hojazade's Tahāfut al-falāsifa to which it is related. |

| The scholastic tradition calls “agent sense” (sensus agens) the equivalent, in the order of the sensible, of what the agent intellect is in the order of the intelligible. If we are to “produce” the intelligible form from images, then is it not necessary, at a lower level, to also produce the sensible form from singular things? We shall first study here the occurrence of this question with Averroes, for whom it seems we have to posit the existence of an extrinsic motor that will grant the sensible the spiritual mode of being required by sensation; then, on this topic, we consider Averroes’ legacy in what is commonly referred to as “latin averroism”, and specifically with John of Jandun, who interprets, rather than repeating, the Commentator. |

The collected studies in this volume explore the epistemological connections between these two sciences, and especially certain essential points raised in Greek and Arabic history concerning this debate. \r\n\r\nFrench description: La question de savoir quel type de rapport entretiennent la physique et la metaphysique est au coeur du systeme philosophique d'Aristote. Ce rapport, toutefois, n'est pas facile a saisir, non seulement parce qu'Aristote ne l'a jamais defini de facon claire, mais parce qu'il est delicat d'en comprendre la nature a la lumiere de la theorie de la science exposee dans les Seconds Analytiques. En effet, Aristote affirme d'une part que la metaphysique, concue comme science universelle, n'a pas de genre-sujet propre, et d'autre part que la physique, quoique seconde par rapport a la metaphysique, en assure le fondement. C'est de ce rapport ambivalent que decoule le plus grand nombre d'apories liees au statut epistemologique de chacune des deux sciences comme a la nature de leur rapport. Les contributions reunies dans ce recueil s'inscrivent dans ce contexte theorique complexe. Elles portent moins sur la difficulte de comprendre le critere ou les criteres d'organisation des traites qu'on appelle Metaphysique et Physique que sur celle de presenter et de justifier l'entrelacement epistemologique de ces deux sciences, concues comme deux disciplines unitaires mais plurielles. | Averroes was fully aware of the fact that Aristotle’s account of intellect as propounded in De Anima was incomplete. This meant that the key facet of Aristotle’s thought was fraught with gaps. Averroes made repeated attempts in his commentaries on De Anima to fill the gaps. The problem for Averroes was this: “if human beings are enmattered entities, how will anything more than sense perception be possible?” Averroes believes that finally in his Long Commentary on De Anima he has achieved a full and coherent account of thinking and understanding that centers on a new notion of the material intellect, according to which, together with the active intellect, there is also a distinct material intellect, numerically one for all human beings. The present article explores in detail this idea of material intellect. It is shown that material intellect, for Averroes, functions as the transpersonal, non-particular and non empirical subject required for the production and containment of universal meanings. The idea seems to aim at connecting consistently the embodied, sensible forms of human cognitive experience with the noetic, conceptual element of knowledge within a basically ontological account. |

| This chapter explores the implications of Averroes’ firm commitment to empiricism and his conviction that an empirically based science can achieve proper demonstrative certitude, in opposition to Ashʿarite voluntarism, which makes all natural events dependent on the untrammeled will of God. Against this Averroes wants to show that through sense-experience we are able to grasp the powers of natural causes, powers that are possessed and yield their effects necessarily, as demanded in demonstrative science. |

| Averroes’ Middle Commentary on Aristotle’s Metaphysics Δ provides a rewrite of Aristotle’s text that was apparently intended to convey the plain meaning of the text to a general, though at least somewhat educated, audience. Such a commentary was necessary because ᾿Usṭāṯ’s ninth-century Arabic translation was insufficient in many respects for conveying Aristotle’s ideas into Arabic. Accordingly, Averroes’ Middle Commentary sought to rephrase and rewrite the text in such a way as to clarify the text, correct apparent errors in it, simplify the text, and add short explanations to it. This article offers a philological characterization of the Middle Commentary that should be an aid for reading the text and comparing it with other commentaries, especially Averroes’ Long Commentary on Aristotle’s Metaphysics Δ. |

| Averroes (Ibn Rushd) is well-known for his controversial thesis that there is only one separate intellect for all humankind. This article provides a detailed analysis of Averroes’s Unity Argument from his Long Commentary on De Anima, which argues from unified intelligible concepts to a single transcendent intellect. I set out the Unity Argument in its textual and philosophical context, explain exactly how the argument works on a new interpretation of its infinite regress (based on Averroes’s other assumptions about the mind-dependence of universals), and offer some brief suggestions as to how it might be further evaluated in light of alternative ancient and medieval theories. Ultimately, I demonstrate that the Unity Argument is Averroes’s most important philosophical argument for his distinctive view of intellect. |
